WELLINGTON GIRLS' COLLEGE SPORTS

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. The girls of Wellington College were favoured with ideal weather for their annual sports held yesterday afternoon in the College grounds and everything contributed to make tho afternoon thoroughly enjoyable. The gathering was naturally tinctured with regret at tho absence of Miss McLean, the greatly esteemed principal,’ who has not recovered sufficiently to be about yet. In Afis-s McLean’s absence Miss Morrnh carried out the duties of hostess in charming fashion, being lent yeoman assistance by the other lady members of the college staff, the pupils, and several interested gentlemen, these latter looking after the vports programme. Three o’clock saw a huge well-dressed crowd assembled on the grassy slope 1 routing the college, over which strings of bunting floated, and from which pn*< ty glimpses of tho deep blue harbour and purple Klmutakas out beyond v/i u* obtainable. 'The tree-fringed lawn btlow, on the shady side of which .seats wero invitingly placed, was reserved for the sports programme detailed below. All the events were watched with, tho keenest interest, into which amusement very frequently entered. The menagerie race, in which a big genial collie with a yeljow ribbon tied round his neck fairly romped homo barking all tho way, was the most amusing feature. All the dogs were very palpably conscious of the fanciful attire in which their girl entrants had rigged them. One small poodle had an Elizabethan ruff—tho very height of fashion —while another’s Maltese lace cap and dress gave it a queer resemblance to an elderly, if somewhat rakish, lady. Jupp’s band discoursed sweetly during tho proceedings. Tea was served in the large central hall, where masses of dowers decorated the platform and tables, and the walks were hung with paintings and sketches, principally tho work of the pupils. Lilies and'broom were used effectively in tho corridors.

The guests included numbers of young people from the sister schools and cob | leges—Wellington College, Miss Baber’s school, and Miss Somerville’s Croydon School being well represented. Miss Morrah wore a pretty figured muslin gown, the bodice trimmed with loco and touches of nattier blue velvet, and a golden brown hat with flowers to correspond. Miss Grace Morrah’s cream Renaissance lace gown was worn in conjunction with a lace hat to match trimmed with mauve ribbon and hydrangias. Miss Nesta’s pretty white embroidered lingerie gown was smartly set off with a black hat. Lady Stout’s striped pale grey silk with guimpo and pouf elbow sleeves of Limerick lace was worn with a charming silvery white toque' with white and black plumes. Mrs Brandon also had a beautiful black and white striped gown, tho kimono bodice outlined with pale blue and cream Oriental trimming, having a guimpo and sleeves of ivory filet net. A .-white crinoline toque trimmed with white feathers -and tulle was added, and also a black silk ruffle. Miss Flora Brandon had a cool green and white marquisette gown with bretolles of point lace and a pink "Merry ‘Widow” hat; Mrs Larnach, a sage green voile costume, feather boa, and small hat with brown tips. Mrs Malcolm Mason was the wearer of one of the many beautiful white gowns in evidence, tho accompanying hat being finished with black and white feathers. Miss Logan, was in biscuit muslin, with hat to match. Other ladies of whom fleeting glimpses were obtained in the throng were Mrs D. Findlay, Mrs D’Aroy Chaytor. Miss Edwin, Dr Agues Bennett, Dr Gunn, Dr Edith Huntley, Mrs Hales, Mrs and Miss Butts, Mrs Fisher, Mrs Boss, Miss Kane, Miss Hardinge-Maltby, Miss Isitt, Misses Rainier (2), Misses Dora, and Ethel Wilson, Miss Geddis, Miss Bauchop, Miss Mary Hales, Mrs Sievwvight. Mrs Goddin, Mrs Dinnio, Mrs Bendall and Mrs King. Croquet putting aud tennis were indulged in by the guests who cared for these pastimes, and the presentation of tho prize® wound up a most enjoyable and successful function.
