. A DUNEDIN PROTEST. TRESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN, September 14. A meeting of grain and produce merchants to-day unanimously passed the following resolution and sent a telegram to tho Premier, the Minister of Lands, and the Hons. J. R. Sinclair and J. B. Callan:—“At a meeting of merchants this morning it was resolved to telegraph protesting against the Noxious Seeds Bill being passed in the present form. The conditions proposed will not have the effect of putting tho responsibility on the grower, producer, or original owner, and the trading community will suffer considerable hardship if made responsible for the presence of California thistle in grain and produce. While appreciating tho action of the Government in attempting to rid the colony of California thistle, we respectfully request that the passing of the Bill by the Upper House be postponed, ponding merchants being given an opportunity of inspecting tho full draft of tho Bill, as it. is likely be so far-reaching in its effects.” It was agreed tint a representative be sent to Wellington to give evidence before tbe committee. ■ A reply was received from the Hon. R. McNab to-night suggesting that merchants should communicate their proposals to Mr Sbirteliffo, representing merchants, in Wellington. A Wollinctpn deputation waited on the Hon. B.
