“THE MEMORY OF THE DEAD.”

. A REPROACH TO IRISHMEN. The following appeal has been issued bv the Wolfe Tone Memorial Committee of Dublin: It is now ten years since the foundaiio i stone of the National ’9S Memorial was laid in Stephen’s Green, Dublin, and. it is a standing reproach to the Irish people and particularly to those who style themselves Irish Nationalists that whereas memorials to the- heroes of ’9B have been erected in various provincial towns —for lack of funds tho committee in charge of tho National, Wolfe Tone Monument have not yet been enabled to proceed with their work. It is stiange that, notwithstanding-the publication of an annual balance-sheet, misconceptions and innuendoes (not to use a stronger term) are still floating about ir. th© air . with regard to the Wolfe Ton» Memorial Committee, and therefore we think it right to state that at the last Convention a balance was shown of .£327 la 6d. In this connection it is well to note that when th© committee was reconstituted the balance in hands consisted of -£250 in Dublin Corporation Stock and some odd shillings in cash. Wa now confidently appeal to the peo-

n\n of Ir'dond to IV* blot from (heir fair fame and alloy/ the men who liav • struggled on to build up a kU:t;g tribute to the principles c-f Wolio Tone, these* undying principles, which are the foundations of our nationality, to com* plci'* their work during the liictiice of the present generation. Let rot Irishmen disgrace themselves by leaving to their children the carrying into clfoct of a work which only their own apathy delays. To giro an idea of how easily the money could bo rai.-cd if the right disposition existed amongst the people of Ireland, it is only necessary to say that 100,000 subscribing one penny per week for five months would raise .£IO.OOO. Surely there are still Itiu.OOO people in Ireland who revere the Memory of the Dead. Those wishing to assist: by starting collections—c.g., in workshops, etc., can obtain collecting cards with spaces for thirty pennies from the Registrar (L. o‘Gormain), Wolfe Tone Memorial, 11, Rutland square, Dublin. Persons not members of the committee or its branches must send P.O. 2b Cd on application for the first card as security. Those who are in a position to collect larger sums can do so by taking out associate sheets to hold twenty names for Is each. Each twenty individuals thus subscribing £\ aro entitled to one delegate at the annual convention, and, moreover, each of the ■ subscribers of Is or upwards on associate sheets is forwarded an ilhin inated card of membership. There is no Irishman who cannot help in one or other of the above ways.
