MANAWATU

(From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, August 23.

Tho Beautifying Society is arranging with Mr W. Moffatt, of Palmer-, ston, to secure the sendees of a firstclass Maori craftsman to execute some craving for the gateways on .the Maori section of the Square. Uis understood the Maoris of the district are Willing to contribute to the cost of this work, which should prove a valuable addition to the attraction of the Square. The Beautifying Society and tho Borough Reserves committee are working together with the object of making the Square a sight worth visiting Palmerston to see.

A meeting was held last night of those interested in forming a branch of the Dominion Scouts. There was a fair attendance, and after discussion it was decided to wait and seo what form the movement would take in -Wellington, before doing anything definite here.

At the meeting of the Palmerston Philosophical Society, at which Mr Cohen presided, Mr D. Sinclair read a paper on “Physiology v. Psychology,” which gave rise to considerable discussion.

The Aokautere Hall (Fitzherbert East) was crowded last night, the occasion being the annual dance given to the school children by .the parents of the children. The whole of the settlers of the district were present, and needless to say, everyone present had a real good time. There was an abundance of refreshments, and good music was contributed by a number of lady volunteers. Mr J. Hastings,, a piper of considerable ability, played a number of Scotch dances, which were thoroughly enjoyed both by those participating in them and those on-

looking. Tho fun was kept going til! an early hour this morning. Tho annual bulb show, to be held in tho Agricultural Hall next Wednesday, under tho auspices of All Saints’ Ladies’ Guild, promises to bo very successful. Tho ladies’ committee' has been working most energetically, and their efforts will doubtless result, as on all previous occasions, in an excellent show.
