Services commemorative of the second anniversary of Dr Tudrr Jones’s ministry to tho Wellington Tnitarian Free Church were held vesterday morning and evening in the Masonic Hall, Bon)ootr street. There wore crowded congregations on each occasion. Tho sub ject of Dr Jones’s morning address was •jho struggle for the independence ol the Spiritual Life ” In the oveninr ho spoke on “Tho Religions of Egypt,” taking for the subject of his remarks a chapter from the ‘‘Book of the Dead.” one of the sacred writings of the ancient Egyptians, which, in thloftiness of th© thoughts expressed, and in its picturesquely poetic language, strongly resembled some of tho most striking nortions of the Boos of Job and, as tho preacher pointed out. might readily be mistaken by people of defective memorr for some forgotten portion of ii.e Old Testament writings. Dr Jones sketched in ’as much detail as the time at his disposal permitted all that is known of Epwptian theology, and nointed out that although they n vored a countless number of gods—an ; mal. animal-hcndrd, human, and abstract deities—these were worshinpo not as mere blocks of wood or stone, but as symbolic of the characteristics I possessed by the creatures real or imaginary which they represented.
