Miss and Alt Maradon have presented Stoke, a suburb of Nelson, with tho means to purchase four and a-half acres as a recreation reserve. “TWO-UP.” CHRISTCHURCH, April 4. Four men arrested at a “two-up” school at Islington on March 31st were brought before Mr Day, S.M., today. Andrew Miller, Charles Waters, and Mathoiv Walters were each fined 40s and tho case against Fritz Sutherland was dismissed. Inspector Dwyer said the school had been in existence at Islington for two yean and “twoup” was rife there. SERIOUS CHARGES. TIMARU, April 4. A middle-aged man was brought ii by the police this morning from twenty miles up-country on a charge of mnl ciously shooting a horse and wounding three others. Ho was remanded until Thursday next. Accused is a farmer, living by himself at Hazelburn.

An exciting incident occurred at biograph entertainment last night. Tbretort of tho mechanical apparatus blew out and a large quantity of celluloid film in a box ignited. A blaze fol lowed, and the audience started to rr ' the doors. Tho police and tho manaaemont, however, averted a panic. Tho opera,tor’s hands were badly burned. Tho loss to tho company iunounts to about £IOO.

George Conroy, who escaped from Burnham Industrial School about two months ago, was arrested hero to-day on a charge of theft of wearing apparel valued at £6 10s at Balolutha.
THE NO-LICENSE PARTY. ELTHAM, April 5.
At tho convention of the Bgmont Nolicense League yesterday resolutions were carried demanding that tho Dominion vote be decided by a bare majority at each general election, whether three years had olapsed or not; also that it bo an offence to attempt to purchase drink in a -no-liconse district except where purchased by the police to procure conviction.
CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED MURDER.
CHRISTCHURCH. April 5.
Frederick Hall, who shot at and wounded Alexander James Muir at Lyttelton on March 7th, was brought up on rema.nd at the Lyttelton Police Court this morning, charged with attempted murder. On the application of the police, who stated that Muir was still unable to ap pear, Hal] was further remanded fo: eight days. Muir is stated to bo progressing favourably, but it is not possible yet to say when he will be able to appear in the witness-box.
