"CHEESE AND BEER.”
(To tbe Editor of tho “N.Z. Times”). Sir, —I regret that in my Jotter of Saturday 1 did Mr Aitkc-n an injustice in leaving it to be inferred that he took no part in the reception of Father Hays. It has since been told to mo on the best authority tliat Mr Aitken a as one of t hose wlo assembled on tho wharf to meet the rev. gentleman, and I hasten, therefore, to make this correction, as a matter of common fairness. Personally, I think it was a mistake to mention the matter at all in connection with the present Mayoral contest, and my only reason for referring to it was to ans.**. - the inane illusion signed “Temperance.” Your correspondent provoked me by his remarkable attack on Mr Hislop when ho oouH scarcely have been ignorant of the fact that Mr Hislop presided at the monster meeting in the Town Hall. While gladly making reparation to Mir Aitken, ~X would suggest to •‘Ten penance” that he do the rame to Mr Hislop. Of course, I withdraw nothing as far as Mr Fisher is concerned. I repeat that he shunted Father Hays, and ref used-even to notice the complimentary tickets sent him by the reception committee. Do your readers want to know the reason ? Hero it is as stated by one of his friends:—“Dahn will get tho ‘pros. 5 anyhow, and, as long as he’s not too picminent, he’ll get a lot of the others, too.” After all, we oan’t bo too bard on a man for looking after his profession. A seat in the House is of too much importance to ATr Fisher tc bo thrown away.—l am, etc., CHEESE AND BEEIt. April Jth.
