I had £290 when I arrived. I lost my money at fanning. I started* as a doctor on May , Ist, 1908. .1 had then £9O loft. I had made arrangements with the Hatfumata settlers that they should guarantee £l2O per year. There were eighty subscribers at 3Cte each. The subscribers were to get medical attention at half-rates. I bought drugs and instruments and built a house. I arranged with Mr Abbot, storekeeper, of Miatamata. to supply mo witih. building maternal. I was to give him a mortgage for £3OO when tho bouso was ready* The amount of the guarantee was to bo paid to me on September Ist, 1906, and in anticipation of receiving this money I incurred certain debts, and was disappointed by not receiving tho guarantee-money at the right time. I gave the collecting of the guaranteemoney to Mr Abbot. I behove he collected £7l. Subsequently I collected about £3O more, and tboro_ is still some owing. Mr Abbot retained the £7l, as the £2OO mortgage was insufficient to satisfy his claim. I expected that the guarantee would be a continuous one, and, that I> should receive the same amount (£120) every ' year, but only a few of tho subscribers would pay after the first year. I expected to make £3OO a year in fees beyond the yearly guarantee.
