Uhlando will probably next sport silk at the D.mnovirke meeting, and will not start at Wanganui. .1. Crockett, the owner of Sylvan Park, bought at tho Hnwera sales a yearling colt by Advance—Madam Colo. Madame Cole is a full-sister to Queen Cole, tho dam of Battloaxo. The colt wall receive his education under the capable hands of Eva. A. Rhodes, wlio bns had a good innings lately with Mikotahi and Golden Engle, bought Star in a at the Hawcra mooting at a reasonable figure. Bagatelle, who ran two seconds at the Hawcra races, gave a good display in her initial essays, and when seasoned at tho illegitimate game will win a good hurdle race. She is . being kept going along with, her otablemates, Commonwealth and , Recreation. Prior to the Haw r era meeting, after doing a £ood gallop, Waihuku came in contact with some barbed wire an.l got cut about considerably. This is bad luck for Jervy George, as Waihuku was in good form. Multifid will next try conclusions at the Wanganui meeting on March sth, but will probably not be forward enough to b© in it at th© finish. Supplement has been leased to E. Cooper, the late owner of Pea.rlie, and will run in his intereats at the - Wcodvillo mooting, and then will journey on to tho West Coast. R. McNamara will ride tho mare in her engagements. She will later on be tried over hurdles, and will no doubt pay her way if properly placed. The nominations for the local mooting close on February 28fch, when good entries are expected. The course id in good order, although very dry, but a heavy downpour of rain •will improve matters.

NOTES BY "ADVANCE.’* Fireiron, who journeyed to the other side in company with Munjeet, made his first appearance in the Sandown Park Handicap on the 11th inst. Cameron) carried Bst into second place in the Welter Plate, six furlongs, and was beaten two lengths by Lorenzo (7.3) in Imin 17sec. Twelve bookmakers were licensed to bet at Miramar on Saturday afternoon. One person who paid the license fee had his money returned and was removed from the ground, he having been a defaulter at the recent Pahiatua meeting. It is the intention of the Miramar management to protect backers as far as lay in its power. St. Joe (ridden by S. Reid) competed unsuccessfully in the Hobart, Cup, run on the 12th inst. Fifteen started. The winner. Admirer (The Admiral—Zither) is owned by the Hobart newspaper proprietor who races as "S. M. Wilson." Concerning handicappers, "Observer" in the ‘‘Town and Country Journal writes as follows:—They seem to be always in trouble about their handicapper in West Australia. Of course, every owner growls at every handicap, and no sensible steward or committeeman takes much notice of the noise they make. When all hands consider themselves equally illused. it is a pretty # fair handicap. But when. influence begins to creep in. the trouble starts. Very few committeemen. can. refrain from interfering with a handicapper, and when that ofticial lias to disoblige all the committee ho feels that his job is none too secure. Then, if one stable wins a lot of races, it is always the handicapper*s fault, in tho eves of the other stable©. They won't admit that the successful man gets his horse© fitter and places them with better judgment. So the poor official has to shoulder tho blame, and before long there is a race club • advertising for a new handicapper. Some day someone will invent a wireless handicapper, with no strings to be pulled, and even then owners will not bo satisfied, as they like to have a “bit the best of it," Since Apologue (Phoebus Apollo— Brown Alice) won the Melbourne Gnu, the progeny of the defunct sou of St. Simon—Polynesia' have been winning all rbund. At Auckland. at Christmas time. Carmnnia (Phoebus Apollo-Cam nania) won. the Ponv Cun and another event the same afternoon. Her full sister. Golden Bell, was 'successful in Wostralia a couple of weeks back. 1 'nmrimis (Phoebus Apollo—St Amy) a half-brother to King’s Lynn, was among the winners at Takapuna recent ly. At Riccarton this mouth The Libyan (Phoebus Apollo—Brown Alice) added a race to tho list and at Woodthorpe Olympus (Phoebus Apollo—Aidqr) nulled off the principal event. Contour (Phoebus Apollo—Crescent) opened her winning account iu the Maiden Plat© at Woodville this week. She was one of tho team taken to Australia by Mr B. Stevenson, but was brought back again.

The Marlborough Cap has been increased in value to 200 sots. Several other additions have been made to tho stakes at the autumn meeting to be held on May 6th and 7th. The Flying Handicap on the first day has been 'increased to 90 sovs, and all other events on the first day have been increased by dCIO.
