EXAMINATIONS

CIVIL SERVICE AND TEACHERS’ CERTIFICATES, Yesterday, in all parts of tho Dominion, tho senior civil service nnd teachers' certificate examinations commenced. They are being hold in Wellington at tho Education Board office, the supervisor being Mr F. H. Bakctvoll, 8.A., inspector of schools. Tho examinations conclude on Saturday, Luuuiry 18th. There aro 78 Wellington candidates for tho civil service examinations, 88 for tho teachers' C certificate, and 85 for Class I>. Those figures are slightly in. excess of last year's, and give tho satisfactory indication that tho supply of candidates for positions in the civil pervioo and under the Education Boards of the Dominion is not diminishing. The additional examination rendered necessary by the distribution of all the' answers to matriculation and national scholarship papers set on Monday and Tuesday, December f)th and 10th, will take place on Thursday nnd Friday, January 23rd and 24th. In ord to interfere ns little as possible witu candidates' holidays, the University authorities will allow candidates to sit for tho supplementary examination at the nearest centre, instead of in Wellington. There are 114 scholarship and 186 matriculation candidates who have to fit again, and tho new arrangement .yill in some degree compensate for an Bi torfercnco with their holidays which .vas nt first tho subject of protest. The sup plementary examination could not take plao3 earlier owing to tho senior civil service and teachers’ certificate examinations occurring during tho greater portion of tho month.

With regard to results, awaited with so much trepidation by the candidates, they cannot bo expected this year : n connection with matriculation and scholarships until a fortnight or three weeks after tho supplementary examinations. Matriculation results which aro not subject to tho additional examination will probably bo available on January 23rd.
