(From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, December 4. An accident which occurred on Monday evening had a fatal termination this morning. It it stated that as two little girls, Lucy Goldfinch and Alice Stubbs, were returning home from school on Monday they were accosted by a man on horseback is*ho asked if they would like a ride. They refused, and tho man rode on. A little later they ■ again came up with him, and seeing 1 that other children were being given a I ride accepted the offer to have a turn, i The two children got on the horse toj gcthcr. tho girl Goldfinch being in front, and then, it is alleged, the man caufed the .animal to start off with a jerk uy striking it on the flank. Both girls were thrown off, Lucy Goldfinch falling on her head on the road, and her companion binding on top of her. The latter escaped unhurt, but the other child was picked up in an unconscious stale. Sho continued m this condition practically ail night, and, after a rally yesterday, died early this morning. An ; inquest is to be held to-morrow. HOSPITAL BOARD. The first meeting of the newly elected | Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held to-day. Mr J. G. Wilson was unanimously re-clccted chairman. Notification was received from the Treasury that subsidies of £124 10s and . £5Bl respectively had been placed to the i credit of the Board’s account. Tho Inspector-General intimated by . letter that separate representation on the Board could not at present be given to the Pohangina and Kiwitoa Coim- • ties. The secretary laid before the Board a summary of the financial position for the past eight months, which was stated by the chairman to be of a generally satisfactory nature, for though in some i directions tho expenditure had increased j in others it had been cut down. It was i shown that tho hospital expenditure had increased by £354 10s fid; and this, less the amount Chargeable to the infectious diseases hospital (£150) left n net increase over tho amount provided for on the estimates ot £204 10s fid. The principal increases took place in f tho amounts for salaries, provisions, . and lighting, the biggest decrease being in tho item' repairs of building and • maintenance of grounds. On charitable • aid there was a net decrease of £94 15s i 4d. The various accounts showed balances as follows:—Hospital, dr., £650 7s 3d; i infectious diseases hospital buildings, cr., £6l Ifis lOd; infectious diseases hospital maintenance, cr., £llO 4s; ofaarit- , able aid, cr., £546 3s lOd. On tho hospital account, the estimated expenditure to March 31st next was £I3OO. Tho estimated receipts for tho same period were put at £1770 14s. They wero to be made up as follows:—Patients' payments, £160; local bodies contributions: Palmerston Borough, £l6B 14© Id; Manawatu l County, £173 12> 7d; Pohangina County, £94 8s 8d; and Government subsidy, £1173 18s fid. The estimated deficiency in the account at the end of tho financial year was £179 •13s 3d.

An estimated surplus of £221 3s lOd was eet down for the charitable aid account on March 31st next. The estimated receipts were £25, and the estimated expenditure £350. The rest was made up by the existing credit balance of £546 3s lOd.

It was estimated that there would be a surplus _ £SO 4s on tho infectious diseases hospital maintenance account. Forty pound was set down as patients' payments, and £IOO a s the cost of maintenance.
