ARBITRATION COURT

PRESS ASSOCIATION. WESTPORT, December 4. The Arbitration Court completed ft two davs’ sitting here to-day. In the case of Frank Cullen y. the Westport Coal Company, a claim for ,CHOO for alleged permanent injury, c£l6o having been paid, the Court allowed ,-Cl2O in a lump sum to complete the payments. In the case Emily Leece v. the Westport Coal Company, a claim for <£4oo for the death of claimant's husband, the Court mad© an order that one-third of that snrn be paid to the widow, and the remainder be placed in the hands of the Public Trustee to administer for the widow and family. The Inspector of Awards applied for enforcement of award compelling the Westport Coal Company to pay a driver in charge of an air compressor 11s a day instead of 10s, as paid by the company. The claim was practically one of interpretation., Decision was reserved. In Donnistoh Coalminers' Union v. Westport Coal Company, alleged breach of award for failing to pay 3d extra for false or bad roof, the company agreed to pay the extra rate. The Mofcihinui Miners' Union and the Soddonviile State Mine applied for an award. After several conferences, a settlement was amicably agreed to, and the Court will be asked to make an award accordingly. The Granity Miners' Union applied for a new award. After hearing evidence on a number of disputed points, the Court reserved its decision.

In tho case Westport Coal Company v. Dcnniston Miners' Union, alleged breach of award, tho miners deciding to work only eight hours from bank to bank, the Court ruled that underground workers had to work eight hours at the working face, the minors being entitled to 8d per shift where their wages are 9s or over per day, 6d where 6s, and 2d, where less than 6s per day, for travelling time. Tho Court had not yet decided what order it should make in tho matter.
