“ALL BLACKS” ENGLISH TOUR.
MATCH AGAINST ST. HELENS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright SYDNEY, December 3. Dealing with the St. Helens maMh, the “Daily Chronicle” says:— ‘ The ‘All-Blacks’ made no mistake in selecting the team to meet St. Helens. Having been made welcome by tho Mayor and tho Corporation, they went on to the football field with a side that included all their ‘star’ players, and won handsomely by .twentyfour points to five, after an exposition —particularly in tho second half—that was positively exciting. “The colonials did not start too well, and for twenty minutes the game was of an even character, the home side, like every other home side met yet, rising to the occasion, and giving the visitors a w arm time. Then Wright opened the scoring, and Messenger enhanced the value of tho try. “This was succeeded by the homo team Amartly fbeahtng the dtefence, through a cross kick and cleverness on the part of C. Creevey, who registered a try and placed a goal. Pretty combined play by the visiting backs ended in another try and goal. At halftimo the Now Zealanders led by ten points to five. “The second half opened with a sensational dodging run by Messenger, who eluded several opponents, and nut a try to his credit, as well as the resulting goal. The home team continued to present a bold front, but could not penetrate the defence, and the colonials, playing an exceedingly fine game, overcame all opposition, and tries wore scored by Smith, W. Wynyard, and Wright, none of the placekicks succeeding. The final result was: Now Zealand three goals, three tries; St. Helens a goal.” • The “Daily Telegraph” remarks:— “Tho Now Zealanders gave a fine display of running and passing. During tho first half Lancashire maintained an excellent defence, and occasionally turned the attack»upon the colonials, but tho latter wore apparently much smarter, especially behind the scrimmage. Tho way the colonials had forced the pace had itk effect on tho home team alter' the interval, their defence being much weaker than previously.”
