THE SUPERANNUATION BILL.
Amongst the Bills brought down to the House laet night by Governor’s message was the long expected measure making provision for a superannuation fund for the Public Service of the Dominion. Skilled investigation has satisfied the Government that the system embodied in the present Bill is not likely to break down under anything like a normal strain, and the Cabinet has included it in the list of the measures that are to be put upon the statute book this session. The funds provided by the members of the service will bo subsidised by a fixed annual payment by tho State amounting to twenty thousand pounds, and tho Bill gives power to the Colonial Treasurer to meet any deficiency that may occur from timer to time. The expectation is that ho such aid will br* required, but the provision for affording it is obviously' necessary t in view of pressing emergencies and in order that tho scheme should not be subject to sudden dislocation. The dealing with the State’s share in tho transaction constitute the Only part of the Bill that- may be deemed “contentious,” • though it ia possible that objection may be taken to some of the machinery sections. That the passage of the Bill will remove a substantial grievance and increase the efficiency of the Public Service there can be no doubt*
