NEWTOWN LIBRARY.
(To the Editor, "N.2. Timca.* - ) Sir,—The proposed building.operations of the City Council at Newtown Library ap* pear to a number of ratepayers a somewhat extravagant idea. We are in perfect accord with increasing the accommodation for the library proper, and would gladly see a larger number of shelves and books therein, but we much doubt whether the Oily Council are justified in their expendl turo upon a large museum-and a lecture hall, seeing that the general Government are about to build a central museum oa Mount Cook. Hails for lecture® are obtainable, we understuud. at reasonable rates in the neighbourhood. We trust the Council wid paut»e boiore sanctioning an altogether aouecoesary expenditure ana confine itself to Uurary additions only, givug a-so more oooks and not an altogether unnecessary i uuuuing. Gux previous experience of leo lures being held above the library are not oommenuaoie tor a similar repetition. W« trust you will see the desirability of > drawug the attention of Councillors to this ere tuey commit themselves to an ex peach tor# which is quite uncalled for.—i am, etc., , RATEPAYER. September 26th.
