A few days ago it was stated that C. M. Daniels, the crack swimmer of the New York Club, who has been competing in England lately, was likely shortly to visit Australia. A cable message received yesterday states that Daniels did not receive the invitation to visit Sydney, having sailed from England for New York on the 14th, owing to his mother's illness. , At St. Mark's Church, on Wednesday afternoon, Mr Charles Knight Duncan, of P. Uayman and Co.'s clerical staff,.was married to Miss Edith Briggs, third daughter of the late ,Mr C. E. Briggs,of the Audit Department. The bride was given awaV by her brother, Mr A. B. Briggs, and was attended by her sisters. Misses Amy and Tottie Briggs. Mr H. .G. Mayer acted as "best man,” and Mr Herbert Travers as groomsman. A reception was afterwards held at the residence of the bride's mother. Mr S. F. Horn, second officer of the new steamer Waihora (says tie Dunedin "Star"), is one of the increasing number of New Zealanders who,' falling under Neptune’s spell, leave the colony, and after qualifying themselves, return as officers in the Union Company's service. Mr Horn was a young school teacher in Canterbury when he decided to go to sea. Leaving. the colony seven and a half years ago as deckboy on the , ship Auckland, ho has, during his absence, worked through the various grades, and now Holds a master mariner's certificate, having successfully passed his examination as master in London last January. His brother, Mr W. H. Horn, is clerk of the Union Company’s works at Port Chalmers.
