HOCKEY

WELLINGTON y. CANTERBURY. PRESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH, September 14. The annual hockey match between Canterbury and Wellington was played this afternoon. The weather was fiqe, but owing to recent heavy rain .the ground was spongy. Long grass greatly interfered with the pace. The play was for tho most part evenly contested, but toward the finish Canterbury attacked very strongly, only tho brilliant performance of the Wellington skipper in goal preventing a score. The heavy going greatly interfered with attempts at passing among the forwards, and although the game was a good exhibition, clever tactics were out of the question. There were at. times some fine samples of individual play, and both teams improved the method of attack toward the finish. The game ended in a draw, neither side scoring. AUCKLAND, September 14, This afternoon Auckland A Club team suffered defeat by United by 2 goals to 1. Both teams had only been defeated once during th© season. Th© Auckland Club held the championship for three years in succession. The ground was very heavy. The United second eleven is first in the junior championship. The ladies' hockev team returns to Auckland to-morrow from Gisborne and Napier, after three defeats and one draw. •
