THE AUSTRALIAN TARIFF
EFFECTS IN ENGLAND ' COMMENTS BY LONDON NEWSPAPERS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON, September 13. In its issue this morning- “The Times” publishes the more, important sections of the Commonwealth tariff. Commenting thereon, “Tho Times” contends that the general effect of tho now duties will be detrimental to British trade. "VTo can only hope,” says “Tho Times.” “that British goods, though tho advantage they receive compared with foreign is in many cases almost derisory, may be sufficiently in demand to prevent the volume of the Motherland’s Australian trade undergoing appreciable diminution.” The “Chronicle,” commenting on Mr Doakin’s resolve to adhere to preferences, is afraid his firm stand will not excite tho Motherland’s grateful admiration. “In commerce principle counts for less than interest,” says the “Chronicle.” “Tho tariff hits the interests of British manufacturers very hard; nevertheless, in justice to Mr D-eakin, it may be said that if Australia is indeed resolved on a high tariff all round, if, in other words, tho only choice is between a proposed high tariff with preference and the Some thing without it, Mr Deakin’s stand may call for gratitude in some infinitesimal degree. Since the slight remissions accorded Great Britain are clearly not within the scope of substantial preferential treatment, the “Pall Mall Gazette” concludes that Australian feeling, piqued by British Ministers’ militant and contemptuous rhetoric at tho recent Imperial Conference, proved too insistent to enable Mr Deakin to give full effect to the policy he foreshadowed in London. The “Westminster Gazette” admits that the tariff would create a worse impression if no preference were conceded. x
