SUCCESSES OF A. DUNCAN. WINNER OF THREE MATCHES. PEBSS ASSOCIATION. NAPIER, September 13. The New Zealand Go if Club's champknisnip meeting was continued to-day. I here was a fairly heavy and very cold wind blowing, wlilch greatly interfered with play. An error was made yesterday in crediting MacLarcn, the professional player, with winning the open championship. Arthur Dunoan won the Hawke's iiay Amateur Championship and the Open Championship of New Zealand. MacLarcn, as the best scorer amongst the professionals, takes the loading pme, Jc 2s, allotted to them, X). Hood taking second money, J2lO. The fourth round of the New Zealand Amateur Championship was played this morning. The most exciting game was between K. Duncan and A. lin her, Ihmoau winning by 1 up at the 21st hole, in the afternoon the tifth round was played. A. Duncan boat his brother very easily, winning with 8 up and 7 to play. H. C. Smith had an easy victory over W. E. Reid, winning with 6 up and 5 to play. It is a pity ho has to play A. Duncan in the semi-final, as on torm he is about the second beet of those remaining in. H. D. Bamford and Major Goidon played an exceedingly close game, Bamford winning 1 up at the 20th hole. H. B. Lusk and W. Handyside also kept close together in their round, Lusk winning by 1 up. In the Amateur Bogey Handicap A. Duncan continued his wonderful run of success by wanning with 1 down when owing 5. H. C. Smith was second. Some capital play was 'witnessed in the fourth round of the New Zealand amateur championsnip. A. Dun can had rather an easy win over i±. 'Wright, The winner played a splendid game, despite the climatic conditions, and did the round in 78. A hard-fought game was played between K. Duncan and A. H. Fisher, At the tenth hole I'isher was 2 up, and at the seventeenth Duncan was 1 up. lasher won the eighteenth, which maae the game all square. The nineteenth and twentieth holes were halved, and iisher. getting into a bunker at the twenty-first, allowed Duncan to- win the hole and the match. Another close contest was witnessed between Hanuysido and O. Armstrong, the former eventually winning at tne nineteenth hole. H. B. Lusk had a runaway victory from G. A. Daigaville. The game between H. C. Smith and C. A. Turnbull was a good one. the canterbury player beating Turnbull, 1 up and 2 to play. J. F, ititchie did not show the same form as yesterday, and W. E. Reid boat liim fairly comfoitaoiy. 11. D. Bamford's defeat of J. O. Kettle wad rather unexpected, as the latter ha« been p Laying a capital game ail througn In the him round there were two e~sy wins, and a couple of very close games. Arthur murcan, still playing m line • Idiin, completely outclassed hio brother, and beat him 8 up and 7 to play. H. C. an. it a. wno is improving with each day’s play, nad almost as easy a victory over VV. ±J. Koid, winning with 6 up iand 5 to piay. The game between 11. D. Bamiom and Atajor Gordon was a very close one. Bamford won by 1 up at the 2oth hole. H. B. Lusk and VV. .Handysid© also played a close and exciting game. Lush winning by 1 up. In the Amateur Medal Handicap, Arthur Duncan .maintained his play in a wonderful manner, and won with 1 down when owing 5. H. C. Smith was a doe© second, being 1 down when owing three, his round thus taking three strokes more than Duncan’s.
The notable feature of Duncan's play during the last two days has been his remarkable accuracy. In the face of a strong wind this afternoon he did the first nine holes in 38 against his brother’s 58. In the round between, Lusk and Ilandyside both drove well, but ■Lusk’s approach was better. He seems likely to b" in the final.
