The fruit markets opened up this week with a strong tone, but very little was available to moot the inquiry, cooking apples being principally all that was offering. There is said to be a fairly large quantity of late apples saved this year in the ATotueka district, and it speaks well for those orchardiste in the care and attention they must have bestowed for the'fruit to show the excellent condition now in evidence. It all points to the fact that with foresight and energy New* Zealand growers are in a position, if not to meet the whole of the demand for apples late in the season, to go a ; long way towards coping with same, and consequently lessening ’ the outlet found here by Tasmanian shippers, who, from July 14th to December 31st each year, have to face, in addition to heavy charges, a duty of id per lb. Last rates are still ruling for most lines, viz.:—Prime dessert local coloured apples, 10s to 12sj ordinary prime, 8s to 9s; good and inferior, 4s to 6s per case; cookers, prim© selected, 8s to 96 fid; good, 6s to 7s fid; interior, 3s to ‘ls case. Potatoes and Onions. • The market continues in a glutted state, with heavy offerings and outlets being forced in the city. The quality of some of the lines is particularly good. Advices from the South indicate that the markets there have eased, if anything. American were available this tnn© last year, and, with New Zealand, were commanding from <£ll to <£l2 per ton. Onions are in better demand, -with a small quantity of locally-grown available. Best table potatoes (.Derwents), £A 5s to <£4 15s per ton, prime «£3 10s to J£4, inferior 30s to 40t>.
