Marine Department has received advice that the beacon located over Maori rock, between tbe north of Kawau Island and the mainland, has been carried away bv the recent gale. The beacon will be replaced probably by the Hinemoa on her ne'xt trro northward. The baiM-e Invermark, from Liverpool. is expected to complete the discharge of her Wellington cargo by tbe end of the week, and will sail early next week for Dunedin. He has been succeeded by Mr Robert Smith, late of tho wharf night staff. Mr R. J. Forster, late third officer of th© Waikare, hns transferred to the Kakanom as second officer. Mr Rankin, late second engineer of tho Tarawera, has joined the Mararoa in a' similar capacity in place of Mr J. McLean, who has been appointed chief engineer of the Squall. Mr Campbell, chief engineer of the Dukaki, came ashore yesterday, and the. second aud third engineers were promoted a step temporarily. Mr Carr joined the’vessel as third engineer. THE WOOLLAHIU WRECK. A large number of people proceeded from Wellington on Sunday to the scone of the wreck of the barque Woollahru. Only the stumps of the three masts of the barque are visible at high water, and at low water only two planks in the bows of the vessel are above water. The beach is strewn with wreckage. The bodies of the late Captain Andresen and the seaman, who were lost have not been recovered. THE NEW TYBER STEAMER. ; There was launched at Belfast on May 33th a steamer which has been built for tho Tyser Line (Ltd.). London. Th© vessel, which was named Whakama, is 466 ft in length r with a gross tonnage of about 6600, and has been built under Lloyd’s survey lor the hignest class in their registry. Th© new steamer is of the shelter-deck type, and lias three complete steel decks, extending all fore and aft. Tho cargo space is divided into five large holds, three of these being insulated aud prepared for the reception of frozen meat cargo, for tha preservation of which a very complete refrigerating installation has been fltteo. Each of the holds is provided with a large hatchway equipped with a couple of powerful steam winches and the necessary derricks for expeditiously dealing with a larg© general cargo,. the derricks being from the masts and special derrick The propelling machinery consists of two get.ft of direct-acting tri-compound engines, wi*h ail the most modern auxiliary appliances. supplied with steam from four single-ended multitubular boilers, working under forced draught.
