The terms of office of the Hon. J. E. .Tenkinson and the Hon. J. Rigg as Legislative Councillors expired yesterday. The Hon. C. Louisson's term closes in December next.

There were several very large estates lodged for probate with the Secretary for Stamps during the month -just closed. The largest was that of Sir Walter Buller, whoso executors pay duty on £160,282. Other large estates were those of the late Hon. A. J. Cadman <£22,070); Thomas Frice, of Wellington (£24,750); Charles Clark, of Canterbury <£32,989); William Begg, of Dunedin (£19,636); John Todd Smith, of Dunedin (£26,500); and John Tinline, of Nelson (£79,891). The Hon. G. Powlds, Minister of Education, will go to New Plymouth to-day to open the new Technical School to-mor-row, After the ceremony ho will leave for Auckland, to be present on Friday evening at the Pacific Club's dinner to past and present members of Parliament. On Monday Mr Fowlds will ho at the opening of the new hot springs at Holensville, and on Tuesday he will address his constituents at Grey Lynn. The Minister expects to return to Wellington on Thursday next. Mr J. W, J. Preston, who has been acting traffic manager for the Union Company at Wellington for ■ several months, has been appointed manager of the company’s Gisborne branch. Mr T. A. Kevell, acting manager at Gisborne, has been transferred to the company's Blenheim office as manager in place of Mr M. Rudd, who has been appointed manager of the company's New Plymouth office. Mr B. A. Pearson, at present sub-manager at Lyttelton, is to act as traffic manager at Wellington in the meantime.

Tho death has occurred, at the ago of fifty-three, of Mr Alexander Morton, F.L.S.. curator of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and Director of the Botanical Gardens. 'While on ■ the staff of the Australian Museum at Sydney, Mr Morton accompanied one of the early exploring parties in New Guinea. He also accompanied various scientific expeditions in tho South Sea Islands, doing valuable work ns an entomologist and collector of specimens. Mr Morton was one of Tasmania's representatives at tho Science Congress at Dunedin in January, 190*.
