A body called the California Promotion Committee lias taken upon itself to issue a. weekly Bulletin having 1 reference to the progress Of the State. Tlio Bulletin for January states that reports show that all parts of the State were fooling the influence of improved conditions. There was a continued shortage of labourers in many lines, which was especially noticeable in ordinary labourers in the lumber industry, and as female help as operatives in mills and factories. Store help, telephone operators, and domestics were in great demand, and office men, clerks, bookkeepers wore called for in all parts. Conditions in San Francisco so far afl building operations and commerce were concerned wore eminently satisfactory. More than 39,000,000 dole, expenditure was called for by the 7,734 building permits that have been issued since the fire. It is estimated by architects and contractors that fully 100,000,000 dole, will bo expended on buildings during the present vear. On© hundred and fifty buildings wore being erected or have been completed and occupied since the fire that ; are between five and twenty-two stories in height, and the total number of permanent buildings erected or in course of construction its more than 7000. The following summary shows San Francisco's condition:— January'permits issued, 787; vain©, 6,822,000 dole. Total permits issued since fire, 7734; value, 30,621,865 dels. January permits for permanent buildings, 540. Total permits for permanent buildings issued since the fire. 3629. January real estate transfers, 770; value, 4,000,000 dols. January postal receipts, 140.392.69 dels. January customs receipts, 752,253.31 as compared with 606,734.02 in January, 1908. California's hoji and raisin' crops have been exhausted at the largest prices paid in many yeans, and it is estimated that the orange crop will amount to 30,000 car-loads, which bring top prices in tli© Bastcrn market.
