PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL
The fortnightly meeting of the Betone Borough Council was heicl last night. Present—Mr G. London (Mayor), Councillors Coles, Nicholson, McEivan, Alexander, Wake ham, Kidd, Castle, and Young. A deputation from the Petone Branch of the Ambulance Association asked rue Council to provide a .shelter for the ambulance stretcher.—The Engineer was directed to report upon costThe Master Plumbers’ Association wrote intimating its decision not to accept the Conciliation Board's award, and asking (the Council to contribute os so that the matter might be curried before the Arbitration Court.—No action was taken, the Mayor expressing the opinion that the Council could not contribute to euch a purpose. The Council's solicitors wrote stating that the Colonial Secretary declined to vest the foreshore in the borough on the ground that the purchase money had not been paid over to the Gear Company and Mr Jackson. They suggested that ■ the Council should baud them the money (.4:250) to pay over directly they hear of the approval of the proclamation.—lt was decided to pay the amount. The Crown Lands advised that lessees in Korokoro hud been called upon by the Land Board to pay their rates or show cause whv their leases should not bo cancelled. " , The Minister for Lands advised that the Government had considered the borough requirements relating to the proposed Korokoro catchment area, and had approved of effect being given to the same;, for that purpose a local Bill would have to be prepared and introduced by the member for the district, and provision made for borrowing the money required; further, that 87 acres of Crown lands would be vested in the Council ns i.' domain without payment therefor.—On the motion of the -Maypr it was resolved that Mr Kirk, solicitor, bo authorised to prepare the neeessnrv Bill. The treasurer reported that the debit balance in the district fund amounted to - 4:1594 18s 10d. It was decided to proceed against all owners of dogs who had not paid the dog tax. A deputation from the Petone Fire Brigade requested the Council to proride a more suitable fire-alarm bell. Councillor Nicholson moved that the .Council’s Fire Brigade Committee confer with the members of the brigade upon a scheme for providing a better alarm uian at present exists.—Carried. Councillor Mcßwan gave notice to move at next meeting that steps be taken to proclaim' the whole of the borough of Petone a fire district under the Fire Brigades Act, 1906.
