The Hon. E. AlcNab, Minister of Lands, leaves Wellington tin's morning for Auckland. He returns about the 21st inst.

Tho Hon. J. A. Alillar, in the absence of tho Alinistcr of Agriculture, will proceed to-morrow to Levin, to open the first show of ’the Horowhenua A. and P. Association. Air Hector K. Bethune, who has been acting-inspector of tho Bank of Australasia in New Zealand for a considerable time past, has been formally appointed to the position of inspector. Air A. P. Webster has been appointed manager of the Wellington branch of tho hank.

Air B. E. Murphy, AI.A., will lecture on mental science at Victoria College during the absence of Air T. A. Blunter, M.A., A 1.50., who is at present away-on furlough. Both Air Hunter and his locum tenons are graduates of tho University of Otago, and received their preliminary education in the subject under Dr Salmond. iTho Hon. D'r Findlay, AttorneyGeneral, will be unable to he present at tho complimentary “social” to tho Hon. W. W. McCardlo at Pahiatua this evening, owing to pressure of Alinisterial business. He will prob'ably leave for Christchurch on Thursday -night, to represent tho Alinistry at tho concluding ceremonies in connection with the Exhibition. i

A “Press Association message from Auckland states that one of that city’s oldest residents, Air F. H. Heighway, died on Sunday at tho -ago of eightyseven years. He had bocii in Now Zealand for forty-three years, having arrived in tho ship Green Jacket ‘in 1863. Ho was in the-service of the Government until tho, abolition of tho provinces, and then ho received an appointment in the Land Tax Department. Ho leaves three sons and three daughters.

On severing his connection with the Bank of New Zealand, Air C. 11. Maclean, who has been manager at Napier for some years, was presented by representative citizens with a carved oak grandfather’s clock and a silver lea service. The presentation was made by Mr H. C. Cornford. In replying, Air Alacloan stated that ho was appointed at Napier in 1871, when the premises consisted of a tent erected on tho site of the present Criterion Hotel. Ho was for some time in the Auckland office, and had been stationed at Napier three times since his first connection with tho hank, thirty-sis years ago.

Dr Robert Burns died at Dunedin yesterday. He had been a member of "the Council of the University of Otago since 1869. Dr Burns, who was born in Edinburgh in 1834, was educated at the High School and at Edinburgh University, and w'as a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Dr Burns held the position of house surgeon' at tlie Deitli Hospital for two years, and embarked for New Zealand in 1858 by the ship Three Bolls, establishing his practice in Dunedin soon after his arrival.- Ho was associated with Dr Hulme, provincial surgeon, at the Dunedin Hospital for about four years. Dr Burns was one of the original members of the Council of the Otago University.

Mr Joseph John Gregan, a wellknown contractor, of tho Dower Hutt, died very suddenly yesterday morning. In company with Mr T. Coffey, his father-in-law. ho had a contract for the Hutt river protection works at Gear Island. Ho left home apparently in his usual health at 7.45 -a.m. to see if some of tho men had started work quarrying stone. Ho redo off -on a bicycle, but when .he got to tho foot of the* hill he dismounted and pushed the machine up to tho quarry. On arriving he seemed very hot, and had taken his hat off. Ho said “Good morning," and.at onco fell hack lifeless.- Dr Hector, who was called, stated that deceased was a lodge patient whom he had attended for small ailments, but ho had no doubt that death was caused by fatty degeneration of tho heart. Deceased was twenty-eight years of age, and had only been married, about eighteen months.
