RIFLE SHOOTING

KARORI v. POST AND TELEGRAPH. On Saturday the Karori Rifle Club fired two matches, and were successful in both. One team met tho Post and 'Telegraph Rifles (winners of the Battalion Shield) at Trcntham, while the other engaged the Petone Rifle Club on the Waiwetu range. The ranges in both matches were 200, 500. and COO yards, seven shots at each. At Treutham the wind varied from five degrees left to dead-in, making the conditions changeable throughout. The Karori men won by 52 points. At COO yards the best scores wore put up by Thomas (Karori) 30, and Randcli (Karori) 29. Thomas was lop scorer in the match with the fine total of 92. PETONE v. KARORI. On the Waiwetu range, the Mayor of Karori (Mr A. C. Pearce) accompanied tho Karori team, and by ms enthusiasm set a fine ~oxainplo to his men. Petone had to draw upon the services of two juniors, but one of them. Cook, made the good score of 83, which was 4 points above tho average of his team. The strong northerly wind was very gusty at times, requiring from two degrees left to ten degrees left windage, so under these circumstances big scoring was not looked for. G. Hallidoy (Karori) was top-scorer in tho match with tho fine total of 95, W. Ballinger (Petone) being next with 92, and A. Ballinger (Petone) and J. Burns (Karori) following with 90 each. Failing light in ado matters difficult at GOO : yards. Karori. shooting steadily, finished up winners hy ’66 points. The Mayor of Karori (Mr A C. Pearce) congratulated the men on the sportsmanlike spirit in which the match had been fought, and said that, while naturally very proud if tho Karori win, ho wished Petone better luck next Hme. ’ Tho club will continue its competitions next Saturday. It is worthy of note that the ’ nineteen Karori men who took part in these matches averaged 85J. Scores : Karori Rifle Club.

WELLINGTON GIT ARES. The "A ” class of the above company held its second competition for class trophies at Trontham rang© on Saturday, at the 500 and GOOyds ranges. The shooting -was not quite up to the standard, owing tc a bad light and changeable, choppy wind. There are three moro matches required to decide the winners. In addition to the company prizes. Private Newton has given a gold modal for the highest grand aggregate in the fivo matches. For B class last Saturday there was no competition, as insufficient competitors attended. Those present fired for practice only. Below are the best scores made by A class :
