June 1 and 3—Dunedin J.C- Winter. RACING AT TAI'HEHEXIKAL*. r i ho unfavourable weather cxperiene-i od at Tauhercnikau on Monday was no ■ doubt responsible tor tho lulling oft i in tho lotalisator receipts, which itdi, short of last season’s figures by £3bl7. | '1 ho welter weight oi 12.10 stopped 1 Laviniu, who is only a pony, in the Hurdles. She just failed to concede Acetylene. avlio has been persevered with since Christmas time, 3st 31bs. In tho Hototawni Handicap, Sunbonuet carried 0.0, and ran six furlong:; in limn 10 3-osee, hew best performanco so far. Platypus and St. Kill, the only other runners, were both better backed, and tho winner paid tho good prico of £3. St. Bill did not score out of his turn in iho Stowaids’ Handicap later in tho afternoon. Ho had only Clem (also by St. Clements), To Kainui. and Sherlock Holmes to beat, and paid tho fair prico of C-3 3s. Tho latter, who is not a sprinter, carried a penalty for winning tho principal event earlier in tho afternoon. Ho only just beat Sharkey]'., who is almost certain to bo heard of next season. Aberration, who was making his first appearance in the col. ours of his now owner, filled third place. In tho Juvenile Handicap Mahuta conceded Rosalie, winner of tho Nursery Handicap on tho first day, two stono and a boating over five furlongs. In tho Tauhercnikau Had: Handicap, tho CVrcnian horse Hiro, who would appear to have benefited by the spoil ho has had, carried 11.3, and ran a miio in Imin *Uisee. in tho Moroa Hack Handicap The. Vouch-1 or put down an odds on favourite in j St. Killian. Tho roan mare was brought out again in tho Waioliine Hack Handicap, * and just failed to concede Culmination This was the only representative Air BtdwiKj bad on the second day, THE FEILDIXG MEETING. Tho Foilding Jockey Club was very fortunate with tho weather -experienced for its autumn meeting. Tho totalizator figures were nearly £IBOO ahead of last year. Tho principal event cadi day wont to tho Waitara-ownrd Volume. who has boon pretty regular at meetings between Foilding and Auckland during the present season. Volume won Inks first race at tho Hangitikei summer meeting last season. Ho also competed unsuccessfully at Manawatu and Trentliam. Ho was then two years old, and is now throe, although returned as a four-year-okl in tho Foilding card. This season ho maclo an early start at Wanganui, where ho ran third to Ito and Frisco in tho Guineas. Tho following day ho was unplaced in a hack handicap. At Eller.siie tho following month ho was third to Cambrian and Loftus in tho Guineas. On the second and third days of tho meeting ho failed to show up prominently. At tho Foilding spring meeting ho won tho Fitaroy Hack Handicap, beating Kitchoumaid and others, and on tho second day won# tho Xikan Hack Handicap, At the Auckland summer meeting ho competed unsuccessfully in tho Cup, ran second to Zimmerman in tho Derby and third in tho Visitors’' Plato. Ho next appeared at Egmont, finishing unplaced in a sprint race cadi day. At Taranaki ho ran third in a Welter Handicap to Silver Shell and King’s Birthday. Volume is owned and trained by Mr J. Goodwin, who did well with that horse’s siro Sylvia Park. ' Ho carried tho “crimson'’ jacket to victory on many occasions. Sylvia Park did not appear till four years of ago, and was racing at eleven years of ago. 1/iko Volume, Sylvia Park scored his first win at Raaigitikoi (whore ho deadheated with Tho Artist). Ho did not appear at five years, ahd at six years failed to score. Tho following season ho won a double at Egmont, and was also successful at Taranaki. A trip to Ellcrslio proved successful. Tho following season ho scored at Egmont, Wanganui, and Ellcrslio in tho autumn. Tho Great-lord Stakes was placed to Air Goodwin’s credit tho following term. The last two seasons tho St. Legor horso was on tho turf ho was successful. A r olume is a full sister to Delamere, a smart sprinter, who appears to have lost her form for the present. Tottie (dam of the performers named) was by Dishonour (Gaptivator—Odaid of Honour) Miss Colo (King Cole—Tinambra) dam, who was half-sister to Raglan and Caribou. Miss Colo was also tho dam of Major (a gelding by Vanguard) and Bello Colo (by Lobel), a smart galloway that was sent to Australia. Volume, with Gazeley, cut out the running in the Fielding Cup, the first named having a length advantage passing tho post. In tho Faster Han'hVip, a quarter mile shorter, Volume was raised lOlhs, and ho won almost as easily as on tho previous day. Ho carried £2OO less than in tho Cup, and returned the good prico nt £G I7s. Fbnte-n just beat PolycnVo for second place. After! running well to tho homo turn Gazc-j ley broke down and came in last. Bad Flamen got homo A. Shcarsby would have led in the winner three years in succession. Flnmon was successful last year, and Rapids tho previous season.

Tho only other donblo winner at tho meeting was Merriwai, who pulled off tho Hack Hurdlo event each day. He scored easily enough on tho first day, but on the second day had to bo kept going to- secure the verdict from Aorangi. who is also by Merriweo. Air Fred Douglas purchased AXerriwai at tho Napier Park meeting for 200 guineas, and he has turned out a cheap horse. Ho is out of Bubbles, by Quilt —-Waikaha, by Torpedo. Aorangi is on tho improve, and should make a jumper. His dam, Ponaturi, by Natator —Sunshine, is a full sister to Waterbary. Tho owner of Lord Soulfc and his, Foxton followers must have had a good timo this season. Tho held for the Mangaono Stakes, worth 230 sors to the winner, did not include, any Munjeets or Ballarats. Tho going was holding and the time slow. Contender, who promises to turn out as useful as Captain Shannon, paid £3 10s for second. Full Rato shaped disappointingly, as also did Splendid Idea, who was made second favourite. Both horses wore without their usual pilots, Jenkins being engaged at Riccarton,

:v\ lE-id at Wairarapa. Tho latte

was available on ilm second dav when EuU Rato was unlucky at tho start. I.To got to the leaders in great stylo but the effort was too much and he dropped back in the straight, finishing fourth. . Wirii Lord Sonlt out backers supported Contender solidly. Ho won fairly easily from Kitebonmaid. Contender returned .slightly less than when ho ran second. Tho Trial Plato wont to Pixio (St. Clements —Merry .Soul), who won from end to end. She failed at Horowhonun, as also did two other winners, Lord Soult and Kainku. An impression lias prevailed that tin St, Clements aro best suited at five furlongs, but Pixio ran seven out in good stylo. Tho Eoilding-owncr-tvain-er, A. Attwood, started three horses at tho meeting and won a race with each, an excellent record. All three wore ridden by W. Young. Tho secern! victory for tho stable was in the Kawakawa. Hurdles, in which Capnlrt (*ut up his best performance. Tho Loth© gelding was picked up at Mastorton a year ago by Ins present owner and has turned oat a bargain. Ho put down n better favourite than Handsome Rose and Assayer, who failed to seo lho distance out. On tho second day, over a milo and threequarters course, ho had his opponents settled a long way from homo. -Vo less than four of tin;* runners (Prospector, (told Dust, Gold Seal, and Assay, or) worn .sired bv Gold Reef.

Tho Woodvillo owner-trainer, Arthur Lord, scored with Routine in the Onepuhi Hack Welter, in which sho accounted for Rcndruck and Moloch. Tho latter was ridden right out, and. as at Dnnnevirke, did hi.-; best in H. Telford's bauds. He shaped no better.on tho second day when .another horseman was substituted. Routine ran with one of her legs bandaged on tho second day, and it docs not look as if she , will bo able to take* tho place of Millennial, who has been temporarily laid . aside. Rendrnek niado a favourable impression by tho manner in which ho cub down his opponents on tho second day. In tho Halcombo Welter, Sandix scored his best win to date. Ho put out a strong favourite in Climax. Martello got homo in tho Muhina Welter on tho second day with little to i spare from Southern Cross (who had j taken part in tho Hurdles earlier in tho day). Samlix, Makikihi, and To Raimi wore* also saddled up a second time in tho race. Ah* Walter Smart, of Wellington, had a win with Kainku in tho Gnga i Hack on tho first day. Little Mary was a good favourite, but failed to got a clear run. On tho second day r»ho got out in front and won in good style, paying £l2 17s. Sho was well handled by R. Hatch, a promising apprentice attached to E. Higgott's stable. W. Young scored his fourth win at tho meeting on Waihuka in tho Scurry. Ho began smartly on tho rails and never gavo any of his op. pononts a chance. Moatn, who ran in second place throughout, was similarly placed behind Toatuhi at "Woodvillo. Tho meeting was capably managed by Mr Edmund Goodbehero (secretary), and passed off pleasantly. THE CANTERBURY MEETING-. The Porirua stable was so nnfortun--1 ato as to shelter top weights good enough to bo handicapped out of im--1 portant events like the Raster and Autumn Handicaps. Prosser sent Achilles and Marguerite to tho post in tho pink of condition. They had the services of tho best available- horsemen in tho country, but tho weights stop, pod them. Achilles was beaten by Eircivon, who was in receipt of Sst «3lbs, and won comfortably in Imin SO 1-osoc. Had Firciron. not been coupled t with his stable mate (Bucclouch) lie would probably have returned a much hotter price than ho did. That his win was no fluko he demonstrated on' tho second day when ho carried ( Jst— 291bs more than in tho Easter Handicap—and won easily in Imin 42 3-ssec. In tho Great Autumn Handicap Marguerite was beaten by Seal Hock, who had an allowance of 2dlbs. Tho racing the colt did at Trentham and Wanganui .sharpened him uj). After witnessing Ills Wanganui Cup run tho writer expressed tho opinion that ho would win a decent long distanco handicap. Tho half-brother to Gladsome is a gross colt, and tho Yaldhnrst mentor probably had tho Riccarton race in his mind's eye. Mr Mason, it is hardly necessary to state, takes a prominent placo among tho trainers in this col. ony and Australia. Tho Hawke's Bay bred Kvcnlodo (King George—Evendalo) won tho jiurdlo raco each day. Mr 0. G. -Stead, who is on his way to tho old Country, won the Champagne Stakes with Do Witte (Mensehikoif — Problem), half-brother to Solution. At tho Wellington Park salo Mr Stead got Problem (in foal to Menschikoff) for 3-10 guineas. Elevation, who beat Glcnculloch for second money, competed unsuccessfully at the spring and summer mootings. He rewarded Air Bidwill with a win in the Challenge Stakes on tho second day, beating Isolt and Glcnculloch in Imin 27 2-5 see. Achilles, winner of the race tho two previous years, was a good favourite. Tho raco was robbed of a lot of interest by tho Medallion horse falling after going two furlongs. The Dunedin sport, who races as “J. Brett,'' won tho Russlcy Plat© with one of his New South "Wales purchases, viz.. Rose Noble (by Medallion—Miss Kilmany). Ho put down a good favourite in Qxton. Tho ICaramu colours prevailed in tho Autumn Plato in which Idenus (Birkenhead —Mount Ida) put down Watcrshoot, The Soult mare Pas Soul gave O. Jenkins his only win in tho Epsom Welter, and Submarine return- | cd D. J. Price 175 guineas of his purchase money in the Sockhurn Handicap. Sir George Clifford pulled off two handicap events on tho second day with Goldbeater (Clanranald —Gold Leaf) and Lady Annie (Soult —Miss Annie), who carried 9.3, and won tho Yaldhnrst Welter, seven furlongs, in Imin 28 4-ssec. At tho sale of Mtß. Armitago’s horses a few weeks back Lady Annio was pnrehaed for 255 guineas. Tho race sho won on Tuesday last was worth 175 guineas. ' Tho Lochiel horse, Red Gauntlet, ridden by A. Oliver, beat a good field in -the Templeton Handicap. RACING AT RANDWIOK. After winning tho Australian Oup with 6.13, Realm was considered fortunate to get into tho Sydney Cup with 7.10—a rise of only lllbs under a light scale of weights. Only on three occasions since 1579 lias tho big Australian long distance handicap double boon won by the same horse in the same year. The previous winners were Savanaka and La Carabine. Highborn and Tartan won both events in different years. Proceed (one of tho Pilgrim’s Progress tribe) started a bettor favourite than Realm, and suffered defeat by two length. Floranee, who filled third placo, is one of tho first of the progeny of Sir Tristram (Bend Or —Angola) from Mr Dan Q’Brien’s old favourite Florrie. -Wan.

din, who acted as runner-up in the Newmarket, beat all the others. He is under orders for India, and should pay his way there. Picturesque, winner of the Flying Stakes, is by Mostvn —from tho A.J.C. Derby winner Pictore, a daughter of Russlcy. Comely, winner cf tho Maiden Stakes and Coogoo Handicap, is by Lochiel —Symmetry fa daughter of Trenton), who won the V.R.C. Oaks for tho Into Mr W. B. Wilson, of St. Albans. Tho Sires Produce Stakes winner (Tho Owl) was beaten in tho Champagne Stakes by Lady Rylstono (Grafton —Lady Trenton), sister to Strata Florida, Lord Grafton, and Sudbury, and half-sister to Lord , Cardigan and Dividend. Mr J. C. .Williamson owns a promising youngster in Blue Book, who ran a mile in Imin 42ksec with 7.4 on his back. At tho last Sydney autumn sales this youngster was sold for 140 guineas. Tho Easter Stakes went to Peru, who finished between Tho Owl and Lady Rylstono in tho Sires Produce Stakes. Ha is trained by his breeder, T. Payten, and owned by Hon. A. Wynne, one of Payt-en’s patrons. Silver Coin (dam of Peru) is a Tasmaninn-brcd mar© by Napoleon—-Silvcrhair, by C-ervus. Those critics who, a few weeks back, were coupling Poseidon's name with Carbine would have none tho best of the argument now. In the Cumberland Stakes, two miles, Dividend defeated him easily. Proceed is an unlucky horse. Ho was similarly placed behind Dividend and Realm in tho Autumn Stakes, and acted as runner-up in tho Oup 4 ho handicappor tried to correct the Cup mistake in tho City Handicap, ono mile and a ha.if, but failed. Although Realm carried 9.o—lGlbs more than in tho Cup—ho was well in. In tho Autumn Stakes, a mile- and a half, on the first day, carrying 9.0, ho ran Dividend. 9.3, to a nook in 2min ST-lrec. In the (.’up Realm met Proceed on Mbs, and Dividend on 20!b;s better terms. Dy beating Collarib and Istria at woight-for-ago in tho All-aged Stakes Lady "Wallace proved that sho is tho best in the Commonwealth over a mile course.

THE AUCKLAND MEETING. Tim southern division did not havo much luck at Ellorslio. Of the threo runners in tho Easier Handicap, Aeolus, who got 50 sows third money, made tho best showing. Tho winner, Waipuna (by Sonlt—Folly), was actual favourite. Ho was ridden by R. McNamara, a successful light-weight a few seasons back, who lias been kept out of tbo saddle the last year or two by severe attames of rheumatics. VW.ipnna won by half a length from Uranium (Leolnntis —Brownie), with Aeolus a neck away. Taylor rode Aeolus, and Towers Sir Tristram, who was some distance back- On account of getting knocked about on tho voyage King Billy, who ran last, was ono of tho least fancied. Mr J. Muir, who owns Waipvma, won the same race with his dam, Folly. She was by Captivator— Tho Jilt, and among other races won tho Takapuna Cup. Folly was a great stayer, an,d on moro than ono occasion won throe races the same day. Waipuna can get over a distance of ground. At tho Auckland spring meeting last year ho won tho City Handicap, ono milo and a quarter. Folly brought off a surprise in tlie same raco by putting down Blarney at level weights. At tho Auckland summer meeting Waipuna carried tho Grandstand Handicap, one mil© and a quarter. Waipuna was not seen out on tho second day, when Aeolus and Uranium wero unplaced in tho St. George's Handicap, won by Paritutu, who retains his form well, and is a well-known performer at Ellerslie. On tho concluding day of the Cup meeting ho won tho Plate. Tho Champagne Stakes wont to Downfall, who acted as runner-up to Glcnculloch in the Groat Northern Foal Stakes at the summer meeting. Tho San Francisco colt was ridden by Iris trainer, F. Davis, and was followed homo by Cadcnco (Cyrenian—Lute) and Pohutu (Explosion— Miss Rose), owned by Airs G. Wright. Mr G. F. Moore, of Wanganui, has boon fort-unato with his Australian purchases at Ellerslie. Colleen and Foutcnoy were both successful at tho Cup mooting. This week Helen Portland (Dorchester —Lady Helen) won the Nelson Handicap and Great Northern Oaks. In tho latter event sho beat Munjista (winner of tho C.J.C. Oaks, easily. Tho disappointing Uenuku (Stepniak—Rainbow) won tho Tradesmen's Handicap, and got to the end of .a nvilo and a quarter in 2min lOt sec. Black and Gold (Cuirassier— Hune) placed tho Tramway Handicap to tho credit of tho Messrs Burke. The pony, Lucrero (Sonlt —Postmistress) won tho Edon Handicap; Hautapu was beaten in tho Brighton Hurdles by a beginner in Nostator (Nestor —Natotor mare). Tho Onslow Stakes, for two-year-olds, went to Haldane (Hotchkiss—Mantle) by Tasman —Mantilla, dam of Korowai, Strathavon, Motor, Mechanic, and other performers. On tho second day of tho meeting tho Great Northern Guineas winner, Cambrian, pulled off a double. Ho carried 8.9, and ran six furlongs in Imin 15 3-ssec. With lib moro on his back ho won at fivo furlongs easily in Imin 3 1-oscc. Celtic (Seaton Dolaval—S-c. Margaretta), Tamainupo (Soult—Winsome). and Miss Crispin (St. Crispin— Winnie) wore also successful. Tho autumn steeplechase was practically a match Kaiicro and Haydn. The latter had just double tho support given Kaitere, who had IGlbs worst of tho weights, and won comfortably at the end.

THOMPSON HANDICAP WEIGHTS. Handicaps for tho Thompson Handicap wore available for owners on Thursday. Tho half hundred horses engaged in the Thompson Handicap aro headed by tho Yaldliurst pair, Isolt (0.1) and Munjeet (9.2), Both were seen out at Iliccarton, whore Munjeet failed in the Easter Handicap, carry, ing 9.5. In the Challenge Stakes Isolt ran second with 9.1. In tho Easter Handicap they were placed on level terms, 9.5 apiece. Up to six furlongs Munjeet may bo tho hotter of tho pair. Isolt ha-s tho best performances over a distance before her wind became Pink 5 Un (8.12) has generally won his sprint races at tho end. Ho gave a disappointing, display on his only appearance at Piccarton, when he ran last all tho way in tho Great Autumn. Marguerite (8.10) is about in her right place. The writer prefers her chance to Full Rato (8.7), Cross Battery (8.5), and Lord Soult (8.4), Aeolus (8.1) is a solid milor, and ran third at Ellcrslio carrying 8.3. Contender (7.12) has recently been showing good form over six furlongs. That ho can stay a mile he demonstrated at tho Poverty Bay meeting a couple of months back, when he carried 5.13, and ran the distance in Imin 40 I.ssec without being extended. Submarine would probably be bolter suited over a mile ami a quarter course. Mystification <7.9).has dibs more than ho .won with

last year, when Polyanthus finished third with S.O. Sho has been off colour of Jaio, and with 7.3 has as much as sho is entitled la on reconi performances. St. Joo (7.8) is another horse that has recently failed to show his best form. Sir Tristrim (7.7) is entitled to consideration. Ho has not done much since lie won tho Summer Handicap at Trentham. Ho now meets Foutenoy on tho same terms, and allows Polyanthus 71bs for a beating. Fontouoy also ran second to Aeolus at a difference of 2lbs. Now Eontonoy is allowed 171 bs for tho boating. Mr Moore also lias a useful string in Helen Portland (7.1). At Ellorslio on Monday sho carried 9.0, and ran seven furlongs comfortably in Imin 30soc. Kuku (7.4), Pas Soul (7.2), Mahuta (7.2), Landwcrn (7.0), Wirral (7.0), Golden Cairn (0.13) havo recently shown some form. A likely half dozen from which the winner may come aro Pas Seul, Sir Tristram. Aeolus, Landworn, I ontenoy, Mahuta, and Isolt. Contender, Lord Soult, and Sunbonnet may run well in tho Railway Handicap.

EXIT EXPLOSION. Tho black son of Cuirassier—Jadcstone mot with an accident on Monday last at Fcilding. "While galloping in a paddock tho hors© got staked. Pr-rc-toniiis sot in and resulted fatally. Explosion was bred by tho Messrs L. and D. Nathan at tho Sylvia Park stud in 1895, and carried the colours of his breeders in all his races. Ho was u massive youngster, and being a big tipped horse was a difficult one to train. Ho scored his first success as a tliroe-ycar-old in tho Auckland Guineas/ At the Hutt ho ran second in tho Cup, won by Daunt, and turned lb© tables on tho Hon. J. D. Ormond’s representative in tho Racing Club Handicap on tho second day, when ho had a good pull in tho woigths. Ho ran last in tho Hawke's Bay Cup, won by Douglas, and the- following day put down Castashoro in tho Burke Memorial. As a four-ycar-old ho ran third to Seahorse and Malatna in tho Now Zealand Onp. Ho carried top weight (8.8) and won tho Metropolitan Handicap. At tho Wellington spring meeting ho put up two of his best performances. In the Wellington Handicap ho carried 9.0, and won, Advance being third. In tho Pearce Handicap ho earned 9.12, and boat Boreas (9.8) by five lengths. At the Auckland summer meeting he won tho Summer Cup and Racing Club Handicap, carrying 9.0 and 9,10 respectively. When ho retired from tho turf ho was given a chance to mako a name for himself at tho Sylvia Park stud. When that establishment was dispersed threo years hack Explosion fetched 220 guineas. His stock havo been slow to mako a name for themselves, but ho appears to have sired a useful horse in Rendrock, a son of Stepfast (St. Hippo—Stopfcldt) Tho Raven (another of Explosion's progeny) is showing winning form in Queensland. Explosion was a comparalively young horso, had become a favourite with breeders in tho Fcilding district, and his decease will bo a sever© loss to his owner, Mr A. Walker.

Several Now Zealand buyers wero among the purchasers at tho Sydney yearling sales on Tuesday. The colt purchased by Mr D. O'Brien for 130 guineas is well connected. He is by Grafton Cello (sister to Gavotte, tho dam of St. Simmer) by Splendor—Orchcera, by Goldsborough—Melody (dam of Melos and granddam of Wallace). Mr Hazlitt, of Dunedin, secured a half brother to Lady Orzil for 80 guinea*?.
