POLICE COURT CASES.
A seaman named Daniel Sullivan, charged with having deserted from the steamer Niwaru, was yesterday ordered by Dr McArthur, S.M., to be returned to his ship. John McGee pleaded not guilty to a charge of having stolen a watch guard and trinkets attached from Alfred E, Ellwood, a fellow passenger by a steamer to Wanganui with the accused. The articles ‘ stolen were locked np in his portmanteau. Accused said he found them outside the saloon door. Dr McArthur .didn’t believe him, and holding the opinion that it was well that passengers’ propertv shonlu be protected, said he thought three months’ imprisonment would - meet the case. Detectives Cassells and) Connolly had arrested a young fellow, named William Johnston on a charge of being an idle and uisorderly person in the .habit of consorting with thieves and other disreputable individuals. The accused told a long story about his regular employment as a horse-trainer and his excellent prospects for future employment. His Worship said it was clear to his mind that accused was a man who "chases the races," and he gave him three months to think over his prospects. A man named Ernest Nioholls similarly charged, pleaded that he did not know it was an olfenoe to consort with thieves and persons of questionable character. Dr McArthur convinced him of his error by sentencing him, to three months’ imprisonment. William McNamara, charged with having been found by night unlawfully on the premises of Mrs John Gregory, of Tory street, was convicted and discharged. George Stafford was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment, James McCarthy to fourteen days’, and Alfred Burnett, alias Pearce, to one month for being found by night illegally on the premises of the City Corporation on Jervoia quay. These men said they had not sufficient. money to obtain lodging for the night. They had only Te, and that they had proposed to purchase food with in the morning. Stafford was the only one of the two who had not had previous acquaintanceships with the police.
