MILITARY TOURNAMENT

VOLUNTEERS AT THE EXHIBITION. A BIG HOLIDAY ATTRACTION. There is only one topic of conversation in volunteering circles at present—the big military tournament to be held at Christchurch on Wednesday and Thursday next in connection with the New Zealand Exhibition. It is confidently expected that.it will bo the biggest gathering of the sort ever held in New Zealand, and as the teams in hard training for some weeks past and volunteering generally has been "waking up,” particularly keen contests arc expected. Tho tournament is being held under the patronage of his Excellency the Governor, with Sir Joseph Ward (who will be. present) as president. The list of judges is far too long to recapitulate here, but the only ones from Wei- . lington will be Colonel Collins, who will I bo the principal judge in infantry i events, Captain Enrp Johnston, of the stall, and Sergeant-Major Colclongh. The squad officers from Wellington will be Lieutenants Hutchen and Mee, of tho College Eifies, whose duties will be to j have the squads ready for events at the \ time appointed. One of the regulations? provides that no officer will be allowed to take any part in any team event; no man will tie allowed to use an officer's horse in any mounted event; and no j horse shall be used by more than one man in any event. •: The Wellington competitors are to leave for Lytelton by the new HuddartParker steamer Riverina on Monday evening.
