Times.”) I Sir, —I have the- honour to forward is pamphlet concerning the examinations ! about to bo initiated by the New Zealand Centro of tho Royal Sanitary Jnslituto. Tho society win- foauo-cci in 1.577, and now can reckon in its ranks same thousands of inemiK-rs. who cnipi-t for the most part of medical men. vetermary surgeons, engineers, surveyors, architects, and municipal councillors. In elfect, tile “personnel” of tho society is comprised of members of all tbo.se provisions which trench on the domain of public health, ft represents, an, it were, the best opinion of the Emtci t mgrlom on public health matteis, endside the trammels of officialdom. Its meetings arc hugely attended by members of all tho professions mentioned, and IHo rccomuienaathms earned ai tho meetings are in due course submitted by the Council to the Legislature. Hie gradual development ot the society has been remarkable. Centres of tho institute havo been established in many of tip, colonies and dependencies throughout the Empire. When. 1 was in- London, the Council agreed to establish a Xcw Zealand Centre. You will seo in tile pamphlet a list of the local board of examiners elected by the Council. Tho establishment of a -New Zealand branch of the institute should bo of advantage to-the loiony. Not tho least noteworthy of tho efforts of tho institute js tho inauguration of examinations for those who Irish to qualify themselves in sanitary science. Tho certificate given by the institute is recognised throughout tho Empire, and it is to b© hoped that in this colony no appointments ms sanitary inspectors will be given to persons who do not hold this certificate. A list of the regulations covering the sanitary examinations is set forth in the pamphlet.
The Council considered it advisable to form a board of examiners at once, the members of which have already been referred to. Shortly after the holidays, I hope to call a meeting of those particularly interested in the Centre, when it is hoped permanent officers will be elected and the Centre put on a working basis.— I am, etc., T. Tho pamphlet from which we obtain the foregoing particulars contains full details of the syllabus for examinations, as well as the regulations undef which they arc conducted, and can be procured at the price of sixpence from Dr Valin tine. The movement for tho complete organisation of the New Zealand Centre of the Royal Sanitary Institute should be heartily supported by all interested in the maintenance' of the public health. —Editor, “N.Z.
