UNION COMPANY’S NEW TUG

COMBINED SALVAGER AND FIREENGINE. . . T £ e salvage tug boat now' being built by Raraage ,-md Eergnson, of Leith, for use in the V\ clhngton Harbour (and elsewhere when the occasion demands), 10 the order of the Union Steam Ship Company .will be one of the most thoroughly up-to-date vessels of her class afloat. She will be specially equipped with the best modern appliances in the shape of sal- - gear, fire-pumps, etc. Her dimensions will be—Length between perpendiculars 117 ft, beam 22ft, depth 12ft 6in Included in her salvage appliances are two lOin and one 6in centrifugal pumps capable of delivering. 5200 gallons of water per minute, or 1300 tons per hour. The tug will also be fitted with a Merryweather quick-steaming boiler on deck ior driving these pumps, and when the salvage operations require it provisir will be made for another similar boiler from the company’s Wellington salvage plant being placed on board. This is specially adapted for Abe consumption of either coal or oil fuel. When using tho latter fuel the boiler is capable of raising 801 b steam in live minutes, and will be available to- drive one lOin and; one Gin centrifugal pump, , and one No. 8 pukometerpump. These, with tho aid of the fixed appliances aboard, the tug will be capable of a delivery; of 0550 gallons of water per, minute, ;or 2380 tons per hour. The pumps are supplied with the necessary lengths for salvage operations of lOin and Gin flexible hose, galvanised bends, piping, and valves, suitable ’for - any maritime emergency, and can also bo adapted for use in-the event of a conflagration ashore. .

The. Union Company's salvage plant at Wellington, includes hydianlic jacks of a combined lifting power- of about 1000 tons, : besides a large number of screw jacks, bottle jacks, and about'on’e find a half mile/ of wire hawsers, ranging from four inches to sis inches in circumference, with blocks and tackles for use in connection therewith. The- whole of the plant is kept in readiness for immediate USB. ,
