THE STATE COAL MINE.
((To the Editor “N.Z. Times.”); Sir,—What has gone wrong with the. Stalo mine .since the headquarters were shifted to 'Wellington? Whoa Mr Bishop had control hero tho "mine worked snlendidly, and there was hardly any lost time for several months. Since Mr. McDongall has had charge in Wellington the mine is barely working naif- ■ time, whilst all other mines on the coast ore working., nearly full-time- .., The papers say people cannot get State coal. What is the cause? There is no fault to find with the management here. Tho mins is capable of turning out nine hundred tons per day, and 1 steamers nr«leaving here with hardly enough coal for ballast. According to the evidence given in the lost inquiry, the,. Point Elizabeth Stale coal is one of the best in the colony for steam purposes. As the finding of 1 the last inquiry, was not made public there must be ■ something crooked somewhere. Miners are building homes on the sections set aside by the Government for them, now Hie Government appear to be starving them out, through want of work. In conclusion, I may state another inquiry is urgently required, and the finding of that inquiry should be made public.—T am, etc., MINER. Port Elizabeth State Mine, Greymouth, . October 18.
