HIGHLAND GAMES.
PRESS ASSOCIATION. OAMIARU, August 26. 'With regard to friction which has arisen between the Scottish Society of Christchurch and the Now Zealand Athletic Union regarding the proposed Highland games at Christchurch, on January Ist and 2nd. a proposal has been made here by Mr Rule, secretary of the Camara Caledonian Society, which makes a settlement of the difficulty quite possible. It is that the Scottish Society hold its gathering on tho day following the union’s championships at Christchurch on January 24th the Scottish Society to run the championships for Highland events and music, and the union on the previous day for all track and Sol'd events; the Scottish Society to have the right to include handicaps in its programme. The pipe band contest, which is a prominent feature ef the Scottish Society's" programme. Is not likely to attract pipe bands from Timara, Oaicaru, Dunedin or Invercargill for these are closely indentifled with the respective Caledonian societies and not likely to leave the local gatherings on January Ist and 2nd. On the 25th a contest would attract all these bands probably, and with them many directors of Caledonian societies as well as tho public and competitors. Tho president of tho Athletic Union is very favourable to the suggestion.
