GISBORNE HARBOUR.

IMPROVEMENT SCHEMES. PRESS ASSOCIATION. GISBORNE, July 10. Mr P. W. Marchon-t, reporting to, the Harbour Board on harbour conditions, recommends to counteract the effect of the heavy range at the harbour entrance, the construction of wave trucks along the western groyne, at a cost of ,-£6OO, or the extension of the breakwater, coating ,£ 10,000. The Board ban decided to adopt the former expedient. Concluding his report Mr Marcliaot says;—The works have no doubt boon of value, but it is evident you cannot possibly hope to give this fine district easy access to the outside world—which it os6iiredly will one day demand—by any addition . to, or amendment of, existing works. It is quite possible and easy to construct a breakwater harbour to th» north-east of the river entrance, so that the largest vessels trading to the colony, could load at wharves to n maximum draught. Such a harbour would not render the present works useless, but would supplement and improve them, giving a calm entrance to tho river port. Such a deep water harbour, I believe, would: bo well within the resources of the district.

The Board has now instructed Hr Marcbant to report on the outer hmv hour scheme.
