THE EDUCATION BILL.
CLAUSE EIGHT PASSED. (Received July 10, 9.36 p.m.) LONDON, July 10.
Clause 8 of the Education Bill (providing means for dealing with existing voluntary schools held under charitable trusts) was passed by the House of Commons yesterday. Mr Birrell accepted amendments requiring a local authority to accept rents fixed by Commissioners appointed under the act.
FAVOURABLE VIEW OF A COLONIAL BISHOP. ADELAIDE, July 10. The Primate lias returned from a visit to England. Interviewed in reference to the Education Bill, he said that it was a matter of great rejoicing that there was such a strong desire for religious education in schools. Secularism was nowhere, but there was a contest between the people who wanted general Bible-teaohing and those who wanted denominational teaching with a conscience clause. On the whole he expressed the opinion that a really good result would come from the amended bill.
