YANKEE IMPUDENCE.

(To the Editor “N.Z. Times.") Sir, From a cablegram that re-' oentiy appeared in our papers wo learnt that the United States Congress had unanimously expressed its horror and disapprobation at the massacre of Jews at Bielostok, in Russia. Without wishing in any way to condone the actions of those responsible for the massacre, 1 should merely like to point out the hypocrisy and injustice of the American Congress in finding fault with a foreign power over its treatment of the Jews. It is almost impossible to pick up a weekly paper without finding in it some account of negro lynching in the various States of the Union. These unfortunate blacks, without the formality of a trial and often innocent of crime, are exposed to all the ill-usage of a violent and pre>judioed mob. I recently saw an account of a negro who was first saturated with petroleum and then consigned to the flames. It must be borne in mind that these bloody orgies appear to take place without any resolute interference' on the part of the authorities. The fact is, that what the Jews are to Russia, the negroes are to the Americans—the object of popu-lar-suspicion and hatred. I regret to see that many of my countrymen cherish a sneaking regard for the citizens of the United States. However much we may admire them for their facility in accumulating dollars, there is no overlooking the fact that the outward and visible Yankee is destitute of those finer qualities which alone can be classed with true civilisat:ou.—l am, etc., E. C. BAGNALL. Eeilding. July 4th.
