A MORAL CRUSADER.
(To the Editor " N.Z. Times.”)
Sir, —-The Rev. J. J. North has apparently recovered from the wounds inflicted upon him by the editor of the “ New Zealand Tablet ” in their lato inky duel in regard to Catholic bazaars, and has gone forth again to tilt at the totahsator and alleged “ libidinously bawdy postcards,” winch latter scandalise his eyes as they look out at him from their perches in shop windows. What is the cause of this prurient letter-writing on the part of our reverend friend from bazaars to totalisator, from totalisator to postcards? Is it from pedantic motives—to show us simple folk his knowledge, or want of knowledge, of diction, his command, or want of command, of the Engf.sh language; or is it for the benefit of mankind, and, if so, how much good has he done for humanity up to the present by this everlasting letterwriting to the press—a style of writing, which, if persisted in, is calculated to stir up bitter strife, rather than to foster a healthy spirit of debate? Has he not enough work to do amongst his own flock—has he no poor to comfort, no sick to visit, no misguided to direct, no enemies to forgive, no friends to cherish, nor a spade to dig wlith? Does time drag so heavily on him that he can afford to spend hours in constructing and writing letters to the press? Although X am a much younger man than the Rev. Mr North, fie may do worse than to take this advice 1 tender him: Let him go about his work dutifully, cheerfully, chaittably, and unostentatiously, and modestly suppress, rather than blatantly proclaim, the fact of the strenuous efforts he is making for the sake of humanity. By so doing he would become a towering human monument for humanity's eyes to rest upon, and his good works would travel and penetrate into the unknown, mystic depths of the future, and be a memorial for all time to perpetuate his fair name.—l am, etc., CHARITY. July 9th.
