THE LABOUR PARLIAMENT

PRESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN, January 18. At a meeting of tho Otago Trades and Labour Council, tho following resolutions wore carried;— 1. That this Council favours holding tho proposed Labour ’Conference, and, provided preliminaries can be arranged satisfactorily, a representative from the Council bo appointed, subject to (a) equal representation no between capital and labour, (b) adequate remuneration and expenses bcing paid by tho Government to representatives attending, (c) control and management of procedure of tho Council to bo vested in the same.

2. This Council is of opinion that the conference suggested by the Premier will act hr a much-need-ed .educational medium, and bo the moans of I: ringing tho claims of our national industries, and tho beat moans of encouraging, protecting, and developing them before the public and Parliament; also of elucidating the effect from a practical point of view of tho past, labour legislation upon the industrial portion cf tho community, arid the Council further believes that the conference would tend towards convincing employers of the wisdom of embodying many of the workers’ just demands in future legislation, to say nothing of removing tho misconception; which appear to exist in regard to tho present laws.

3. That tiie Council deprecates tho tone of tho resolution passed, by the Otago Employers’ Association in reply to the letter of the Labour Department to bo represented at the conference, and considers it is a direct attack upon the Premier, crude in construction, and not in accordance with truth, or relevant to the matter contained in tho department’s communication.

•I. That the Government bo urged to bring into force a regulation restricting tho weight of grain contained in hags to 200 pounds.
