This Is tho time of year, says tho “Otago Daily Times," when our brigluly-plunmgul feathered visitor tho shining cuckoo lakes his departure from N'cav Zealand's shores after his annual three montlus’ visit. Tho beautiful little bird, with liis pleasant note, is not very frequently seen in tho gardens of tho city and suburbs. Jjir Walter llul'or gives some interesting particulars of tho shining cuckoo in his well-known work: "Hut while we are still listening, a now sound arrests tho attention —a peculiar whistling cry, different from that of any oilier bird. This announces the arrival in our country of tho shining cuckoo, an inhabitant ol Australia and probably New Guinea, which appears in Now Zealand (also in Norfolk Island) only as a summer migrant. Tho cry is always welcomed by tho colonists as tho harbinger of spring, and during us short stay with ns its sweet but plaintive notes may bo heard in every grove throughout the long summer days. . . . For a period of ten years I kept a register of its periodical arrival at Wellington, and noted its regular occurrence between the sth ami 10th of October. It visually departs about tbo first or second week in January but in the fur north it sometimes lingers till the end of the month." Like the long-tailed cuckoo, this species lays its single egg in the nest of some native bird, usually the little grey warbler, where it is deposited for incubation. In due time all the egg? arc hatched: but after the lapse of a day or two the young cuckoo becomes the solo tenant of the nest, and tho dead bodies of the others are found lying on tho ground below, the intruder being catered for by the tester parents until it is readv to shift for itself.
