SATURDAY'S MATCHES. There was again a large muster at Trentliara on Saturday afternoon despite the races. When the season opened, and 2.50 men went out to the range, it was said i.he a’tendances would soon drop off. This lias not been the care, and although the weather each Saturday Ims been anything but pleasant, enthusiasm has net waned. Trenlliam always has had a name for ''fish-tail’' weather, and last Saturday was no exception to the rule. The wind was boisteious to a degree, and the shooting was anything but first-class. On account of the races the usual ‘‘special” did not rim bach Irom Trcnthcin—it took them out —volunteers returning by the "mail." arriving in town about a quarter of an hour later than usual. The Karori Riflo Club made its first appearance at the range, a dozen members of the club being present. Prior to starting trophy coinpetiuon next Saturday, a club match was fired between teams selected by G. Hnllulay and \V. E. Jackson, the latter’s team winning by 43 points, in addition to their trophy shooting competitions, the Highlanders and Guards fired a ten-man match, the Guard;, winning bv 79 points. Lieut. Hollard, of the Hutt ,Valley Hides, made the best store in the seven-shot contests at 600 yd;. registering 31, while at 700yds Private A. .). Jackson, of the City Junes, was top with 23. The GOO, and 1 00yds nmges v.exe shot over—dilficrilt ranges at any lime; but far more so in blustering, “corkscrew'’ weather. Lieut. .Smith (Guards) was ronge officer, Sergeant-Major Baker (bubmarines), having charge of the trench.
