In tho Federal House, tho Hon T. T. Ewing, Vice-President of tho Executive Council, outlined tho Government's defence policy.

It was proposed, ho said, to stand by the agreement as regards naval affairs with tho Imperial Government. Coastal and harbour defence was tho first problem to bo dealt with. It was estimated that from half a million to a million would bo required to put tho forts in efficient order. Tho Government intended to get tho very best advice on the matter before starting to spend money.

At tho present time tho Commonwealth had only one riHo for every thirty men on tho electoral rolls. It was proposed to spend all tho money available on rifles, purchasing 8000, at a cost of £34,000.

A leading feature of th© Govornmcnt’K policy would bo tbo development and improving of cadet and riflo clubs, and tho increasing of tho output of ammunition and small arms.
