THE LEATHER TRADE.
(To the Editor "N.Z. Times.”) Sir,—l noticed with pleasure a letter signed “Leather.” There is no doubt that what the writer states is true. The ’leather trade is in danger of extinction. An export duty is necessary on raw material, say, a farthing per lb, or ten per cent, on value. I have often wondered how long the go-nhcad business man of Wellington expects land values to keep up if there is no work for skilled artisans such os the leather trade produces. There-is room and money in the leather trade, particularly in Wellington district. What is required (owing to progress and fashion) is a company with capital enough to put down a plant, and machinery of tho latest labour-saving devices, selected by a practical man who knows the trade,’ and is able to explain and do the work if required. If the Wellington district wishes to hold its own as a progressive one, it is necessary that there should be local industries such os the leather trade, which provides steady employment and permanent wages to a large number of men.—l am, etc..
