WELLINGTON EUGBY UNION. s A meeting of the committee of the Wellington Eugby Union was held last night. • IVo players in the Wednesday contests. wno were ordered off the field..at Miramar for fighting, wf 11 appear nest Thursday at an inquiry. A point was raised that no inquiry could be held because the matter was not reported by the referee within six days; as''laid down by the union’s by-laws, but the majortiy held that the English rules of the game allowed an inquiry even after six days had elapsed. The committee set up to go into the by-laws recommended .that the by-law fixing six days as the limit at which offences on the field can b© reported by a referee should be altered to remove the time limit. A recommendation was also made that the Management Committee shall have power to inquire into any cases -of misconduct brought under its notice (this, would give power to others than referees to report). The committee decided to call a meeting of delegates to discuss the recommendations. Messrs W. Hales and L. B. Jordan were elected to vacancies on the committee. ■", __ _ - It was decided to ask the Now Zealand Union to .allow Wellington representatives in the team for Britain to play for Oo province against tho touring Permission was given tho Petoho team to make a presentation to D. McGregor prior to his departure to Australia. The Kia Ora and Railway teams were given permission to play the Hutt Valley Rifles and Upper Hutt teams respcctXThe matter of playing the second match between the Oriental and Petone Clubs in the city was left in the hands of the Ground Committee. _ ' _ V letter was received from the New Zealand Union, upholding the disqualification of a player, who bad been guilty of misconduct during a match between the Addington and Petone workshops at Easter. The letter conveyed a resolution passed by the parent body, ''that it expressed surprise that the referee should hare given it as his opinion that drunkenness was not a sufficient cause to warrant a’referee in ordering a player off the field/’ , . It having come to the knowledge 01 the Management Committee that a report prepared by a referee concerning the ordering off the .field of a 4 certain player had been altered at the instance of the Referees’ Association, it was decided to ask that body for an explanaTlie Association game authorities having expressed concern as to the reason the Peton©-Oriental game was not Played at the Athletic Park on the day of the match between the Wellington Association team and the New Zealand Association team ,as expected, the secretary was instructed to give an explanation. It was decided to send teams to play Wairarapa and Horowhenua on July Bth. Manawatu will be asked to play at Wellington on July 15th. Members of tho Selection Committee will accompany tho teams into the country in connection with the selection of players for the Wellington match against the New; Zealand team. A member of the 'Selection Committee will also be sent to watch likelv men in the Wanganui-Manawatn match on July 22nd. and selectors all over the province will be consulted before the Wellington team is pickod. Mr C. Campbell, one of the city selectors, wrote resigning from the Selection Committee on the grounds "that it was petting like a crime for a man to play football at.the present time, on account of the rough-play, craze/’ The committee delegated the chairman and secretary to interview Mr Campbell. The Institute Boys’ team (Fifth-class) was disqualified during the pleasure of tho union as a result of a referee’s charge against several of them for obscene lan-

guago during' their match against St. Patrick’s College. A resident residing in the vicinity of the ground wot© to the union that at His residence he could hear strong language, and the challenges of someone to fight the referee. The Iter Father Keogh, rector of St. Patrick’s College, also wrote that “if the conduct complained of is not ended or mended we shall hove 'to face an additional difficulty in the upkeep of Rugby football in New Zealand.” One of the Institute team, who had been ordered off the field, i was disqualified .for three years. ! The match between Victoria College and Otago University, prior to the latter team’s departure for Now South Wales, was set down for July Bth at the Athletic . Park. i The secretary wos instructed to write ! to the Wairarapa Thursday Union, asking if it was the inieutioh to play a . match against the,-Wellington Wednesday representatives this season, | A mmeber of the St. James’s team was suspended for two playing Saturdays for having used an insulting remark to a referee. . THE RUGBY TEAM FOR HOME. (To the Editor, “N.Z. Times.”) Sir,—Re the New Zealand football team ! going Home.-I-would, point out that Abbott, lb© three-quarter . back nlaying in | Taranaki (skinner of Star Club) is play- ( ing in splendid form this season, and it ;is universally ' declared here that ho ! should have been one of the first backs : picked. Ho is a very strong runner ' (scratch man- in running events throughput Taranaki), takes a ball beautifully, | a grand, kick, and good both in attack and defence, .and as a .back you could [ hardly find .fault with him. As he is f now playing. I should think he scales all | thirteen stone. In every match this sea- | son ho has played in,,h© has scored most of the points, and has not as yet failed to score in a match. When • playing against Inglewood he scored no less than five tries, completely, paralysing the opposing backs; and last. Thursday, when playing against Clifton,, ho scored the only two; tries for Star, which beat Clifton 6 to 3., I mention this because I hear the New Zealand Rugby Union are going to dispense with the coach they intended: to take and include another player.- If this should be the case, I think Abbott would be a grand acqiiisisition to the team. The public throughout Taranaki ..fairly rave over his* play, and cannot understand why he was not included, as thev think him a marvel; and I. think df no were included every on© in Taranaki would be pleased, and say. “Well, he deserves it, as ho is without a doubt one of the most brilliant backs in New Zealand.”—l am etc..
