DISCUSSION BY CITY COrXCTLLOKS. COMMITTEE REPORTS. At last night's meeting of the City Council the Tramways Committee recommended That the Karori Borough Council he requested to place any proposals they may have in writing with 'ofcronce to tramway extension to Karori before their delegates meet the fo.nmiUee; that a slight alteration ho mado in the running of the workmen’s cars from Aro and Wallace streets, as ■(■commended by the Electrical Engi"."er; that the Electrical Engineer ho instructed to have protecting shields i heed on one car to protect motormen, mil to report as to tho success or "iherwiso ci’ the experiment; that tellers ho invited for the excavation work in connection with the Brooklyn line and the tunnel to Kilbirnio, all ina’■erial for permanent way, cables, and ■ll overhead equipment in connection with the extensions to Melrose; that tho necessary steps be taken to procure the properties required for the tramway extensions to Melrose ; that the Petone Borough Council bo informed that, owing to pressure of work, the Electrical Engineer is unable to furnish a rcnort on tramway installation at Pctono, hut that if they apply again in about plx weeks’ time their application will receive favourable consideration; that !ho following tenders ho accepted for the supply of tramway uniforms, etc.— Inspectors’, motormen’s, and conductors’ overcoats, Wellington Woollen Company; inspectors’ patrol jackets mrl trousers, motormen’s, and conductors’ tunio and trousers, Messrs C.

Cathie and Co.; inspectors’, motormen’s, and conductors’' caps and capcovers, Messrs C. Hill and Son ; inspectors’ and conductors’ waterproof coats, motormen’s oil-coats, sou’-westers, and oil-lnits, Messrs C. Hill and Sons. Mr Hindmarsh moved that tho.clause dealing with tenders he referred hack to the committee for further inquiries, lie understood that there wore two fogs worked in Wellington—a factory log and a shop log. Councillor Biss pointed out that the putting in of tho glass protections meant that the hand-brakes and machinery would have to be shifted, and that was a big order. The engineer promised to see what could be done to Srot over the difficulty as soon ns possible. A report from the Dunedin engineer gave the information that-in that city on’Mi wet night the glass protections were always kept open. iho recommendations were adopted. REPORT TO BE CONSIDERED. The. following recommendations of ■ . the Tramways Committee were held C .i)ver for fuller consideration until next * mooting;—That a charge of 3d be- made for any distance for luggage, parcels, baskets, or articles of any kind whatever,not exceeding 281 b in weight, and •which cannot be hold on n passenger’s lap without inconvenience to any other passengers, or which do not encroach •on other passengers’ room in the car; that a charge of 6d be made for lug•gage, etc., as above over 281 b, but not .exceeding 60lb; that the charges for luggage proposed to bo made shall not •affect tho right of a conductor, under the by-law, to refuse to take any article which ho considers "inconvenient to carry, or the contents of which are, of an obnoxious character; that no article or luggage be carried .unless accompanied by a passenger; that the 'Council accept no responsibility whatever in the carriage of luggage or articles. Tho above suggestions to be in- . Haded in the by-law, upon the City Solicitor advising that the Council have power to do so; that in future a charge of 4d per unit bo made for all /power supplied for outside purposes, out that a discount of one penny per unit be made upon, payment of accounts within fourteen days. TIME-TABLE. That the following alterations be itiiiule to the Sunday tramway timetable during tbe winter months, in order to reduce the cost of working:— A route (Island Bay to Government railway station) by three cars. Those timed to leave Duppa street at 1.32, /1.62, and 2.12 p.m., making a twenty minutes service. B route (Newtown to Botanical Gardens) to remain as at present. C route (Constable street to Government station) reduce to three instead of .-five cars, making a fifteen minutes -service .on this route, and taking away ■cars leaving Constable street at 1.22 uind 1.52 p.m. D route (Oriental Bay to Government station) reduce to two cars, and twenty minutes service, taking from •this route the Cars timed to leave Oriental Bay at 1.36 and 1.50 p.tn. E. route (Wallace street to Thorndon Esplanade) reduce to two cars, taking away the cars timed to leave Wallace street terminus at 1.37 and 1.57 p.m., maintaining a twenty minutes service. F -route (Aro street to Government station) reduce to two cars, and maintain a ten minutes service from Aro street to Manners street. That the Electrical Engineer bo authorised to order two more combina-tion-cars from Messrs Rous© and Hur--•oll, Wellington, price nob to exceed the cost of previous car made by them. STOPPING-PLACES. That the following alterations be made to the stopping-places In the city:— ’That a conditional stopping-place be painted on pole B 191, opposite Wellington Woollen Company’s premise®, Jervois quay. That tho conditional stop at the cor.nor of Maimers and Herbert streets bo painted out. That tho conditional stop at post F Tsl, Molesworth street, be changed to post near Murphy street. That the stop near the corner of Fitzherbert terrace painted out. That the conditional stop at post ;E 54, Webb street, be painted out. That tho stop at post E GG, Hopper bo changed to post E 62, four poles nearer T Webb street.

That tho stop at post TC 70. Hankoy street, bo changed to polo B 72, at corner of Hankoy and Hopper streets. rowEU srrrLY. That tiio application of Messrs \eitcli and Allan for tho supply of electrical power he granted on the? usual conditions; that no further application for tho supply of electrical power he granted until the present machinery in the power-house is increased. PENNY SECTIONS. That tho following alterations be made to the present penny sections;— All sections to end vt junction of Manners and Cuba streets. From Manners slrret to Basin .’Reserve, Id; Basin Reserve to Constable street. Newtown Park, or Duppa street. Id; Manner street to above-mentioned termini, 2d : Manners street- to Oriental Hay, or Wallace street. Id; Manners .street to Government rail way station,ld ; Government railway station to Thr/rndon quay, or Tinakori road. Id; Aro street to Manners street, Id ; Manners street to Thorndon quay, or Tinakori road, 2d. That the destination of nil cars be placed inside, as well as outside, cars; that tho shelter-shod at Cambridge ter race he moved opposite to Kent terrace ; that the Electrical Engineer be granted authority to divert the traffic whenever occasion demands. A recommendation was agreed to that tlie tramway by-laws he amended to make it an offence to hoard or leave combination cars on tho wrong side. THE CHURCHES AND THE TRAMS. A letter was read from the Council of Churches requesting that the trams should be stopped on Sundays, and that a plebiscite ho taken to discover the opinion of citizens. The letter.pointed out that although the noise had been minimised by the cars slowing down during service, the trouble had hot been entirely done away with. Councillor McLaren moved that the request be not acceded to. The Council was not in a position to cease tho running of tho cars. Councillor Frost moved that tho matter be referred to the Tramways 'Committee. Councillor Winder suggested that an experiment should be tried of stopping tho cars during church service. Councillor Murdoch saw difficulties, and was of opinion that if there was any stoppage it must bo entirely from G p.m. on Sundays. Councillor Wiltshire argued that the running of tho cars was not a question of finance, but a question of public convenience. Tho motion of Councillor McLaren was carried.
