IMPENDING PROSECUTIONS. Proceedings are to bo taken in tho Magistrate's Court next Monday ■against ■ four shopkeepers carrying on business in Wellington for failing to comnly with the provisions of tho Shops and Offices Act. The cases are being brought by the Labour Departinont. . i Tho shopkeepers concerned in tno cases are:— Horace W. Lloyd, jeweller, Lainbton quay. „ Fred W. Moore, grocer, Courtenay place. Fook Lee, fruiterer, Lambton quay. Wong She, fruiterer, Cuba street. Tho information states that the said shopkeepers, being the occupiers of shoos within the meaning of the Shops and" Offices,Act, 1904, did not close their shops for business between the hours of six o’clock in tho evening and eight in tho morning on tho next succeeding working day on four days of tho week, to wit, Monday, 22nd, Tuesday, 23rd, Thursday, 25th, and Friday, 26th of May, being days upon which all shops in the combined district are directed by law to ho closed. SHOPS AT SEASIDE RESORTS. PRESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH, bfay 31. Representatives of Sumner and Now Brighton shopkeepers waited on several members of Parliament to-day, and urged that the Shops and Offices Act. should bo amended in the direction of excluding such resorts, as Sumner and New Brighton from “combined districts,” as defined by the act. This would have the effect of bringing those resorts under the operation of section 21, would would give shopkeepers the power to fix the hours at which their shops should bo closed, and also leave to them the determination of the day on which the weekly half-holiday is to bo observed. The members of the House expressed their concurrence with the view expressed by the shopkeepers, and suggested that, in order to strengthen their hands in Parliament, a petition, signed not only by shopkeepers, but also by tho public generally, should be drawn up and signed, asking for an, amendment of the law in tbe direction indicated. It was decided that similar resorts near the other centres should be communicated with, and asked to co-operate in the moroment, and also to get the shopkeepers at such resorts to enlist tho sympathy and assistance of the members of tho House representing tho districts in which those resorts are situated.
