LIGHTHOUSES.
POSSIBILITIES OF WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY. The possibility of utilising wireless telegraphy to connect Cape Campbell or Penoarrow with Stephen, The -Brothers, or Cape Palliser lighthouses has been engaging the attention of the Minister of Marine. During his visit to England Mr Hall-Jones inquired into tho question of cost, and since his return he has been in correspondence with Home and foreign firms on the subject. Tho cost of a single installation would, he finds, be between £6OO and £7OO. or about £3OOO for four stations. The Minister, when at Home, was 'very much disappointed to find that so little had been ’done by the controlling authorities with regard to utilising wireless telegraphy in connection with the lighthouses there. Their view, was that the invention was somewhat in its experimental stage, although America and Germany were freely adopting the system in connection with their lighthouse services. Mr Hall-Jones is now in communication with a Continental firm on tho matter. “I quite appreciate the ■ importance of wireless telegraphy and its possibilities,'’ said the Minister to a “New Zealand Times" representative. "In tho event of war, a wireless telegraph station at tho Brothers or Stephen /lighthouses, or at Cape Campbell or Penoarrow, communicating with stations inland, would be invaluable. I have complete specifications of what is required, with estimates, and I am now getting additional quotations with a view to further consideration of tho question.”
