FOOTBALL.
NEW ZEALAND RUGBY UNION. Tho New Zealand Rugby Union met last night, and sat until 11 o’clock. Present —Messrs Dixon (chairman). Campbell, Galbraith, I'achc, Coffey, Isaacs, Laurcr.son, Weir, and M ylic. Afr A.. T. Devore (nominated by the Auckland Union) and Air \\ . Atillov (nominated hy the Poverty Bay Union), wore, elected vice-presidents. / Tho Otago Union asked for a ruling ns to whether an injured player could ho replaced. It was decided, in view of tnc letter on this subject received from tho English Union, that it was illegal lo replace nnv plavcr injured. 11ns decision. however, was only arrived at by a narrow majority, owing to tho. way in which the English Union had given its ruling, and it was agreed to communicate again with the Home Union, asking for a more definite decision. The Olago Union also asked.for advice as to whether a player being in front .of ono of his own side from whom he received the ball, should be considered offside. It was resolved that the greater penalty of a free-kick should be given in cases where such player handled tho ball. . . , Various unions asked for permission to plnv soveu-a-sido tournaments, ft was decided that the local unions had power to regulate their own competitions. Loiters were received from the,Hon .1. D. Ormond, Afessrs J. N. Williams, F. Logan, R. D. D. AlcLean. J. It. Coleman, and T. H. Lowry, all of Hawke’s Bay, offering to take up debentures in connection with the expense of sending the Now Zealand team Home. The debentures wore nil for £SO. with one exception, which was for .£2O, So far, Hawke’s Bay is ahead of any other district in the matter of taking up debentures. Tho time of commencement of the North v.\ South Island match, to bo played at tbo Athletic Park. A\ cliingtou. on Juno 3rd, was fixed for 2.15 p.m. instead of 3 p.m., as formerly arranged. The question of the boundaries of the various affiliated unions was referred to a sub-committeo for report. This question arose out of a dispute between the Canterbury and South Canterbury Unions as to whether the former body could affiliate members who had hitherto played for tho South Canterbury Union. WELLINGTON UNION.
Tho Committee of the Wellington Rugby Union met last night. Permission was granted to the representatives of the various local banks to piay their annual match under the rules of the union. Permission was also given members of affiliated clubs to take part in a match between teams from the Wellington Meat Export Co. and the Gear Co.
ilr J. Fairbairn. according to a letter received, has presented a trophy for the most improved player in the Johnsonvillo Chib for tho season.
An appeal from tho St. James junior team against their defeat by tho Oriental team was dismissed as was also an appeal from the Ponek© seniors aganist a try gained by tho Oriental seniors at tho Athletic Park. A letter was received flora tho Kia Ora Club protesting against the suspension of a player for alleged misconduct during tho match between representatives -of the Potouo and Addington Workshops on tho ground that the decision was against the weight of evidence; that tho player was not reported to the union by the referee; that the inquiry was not held within six days of the alleged offence; that tho union had no jurisdiction over the match; and that the disqualified man was not at the time of tho alleged offence a member of the Kia Ora Club nor, as far as the club knows, a member of any other affiliated club. Since the hearing of tho Petone-Adding-ton case the union has satisfied itself that false evidence was given by at least one witness, and intends to take action against him at next meeting. Messrs J. T. King, H. Mclntyre, and D. McKenzie were appointed to confer with a committee of the Referees 'Association with the object of improving tho game. Mr A. McCrae was appointed to till a vacancy on tho Junior Selection Committee.
The captain of the Poneke third fifteen was suspended for a week for including in hi s'team a junior player, and the captain of the Southern (Wednesday) team was also suspended for a week for’ including in his team a player not on tho list of of the club. Two matches of the fifth A-class, in which St. Patrick's College had played B players, were ordered to be replayed. Mr J. Murray wrote accepting the position of •auditor.
Mr G. Pinnoek having offered a trophy for competition, the union will consider tho ndvisableness of devoting it to tho team displaying most brilliancy during tho season.
THE SOUTH ISLAND TEAM. The_ South Island team to play against the North Island fifteen at the Athletic Park, on Juno 3rd, is as follows: —Fullback. Gillett (Canterbury); three-quarters. Booth (Otago), Harper (Canterbury). Reid (Southland); five-eighths. Deans (Canterbury), Stead (Southland); half, Fraser (Southland); forwards, Casey (Otago), McNie (Southland), Johnson (Otago). Corbett (West Coast), Learmont (West Coast), Horgan (South Canterbury), McDonald (Otago), Newton (Canterbury).
Special to the “Times.” FKETAHUNA. May 23. In the Wairarapa Thursday Union football match, Eketabuna v. liberal, played here this afternoon, the former won by four points to nil. ASSOCIATION. TEAM FOE NEW SOUTH WALES. The following team has been selected to tour New South Wales;— Goal —F. Smallbone (Otago), Backs—A. Clapham (Wellington), Harrison and Newman (Otago). Halves—W. White, presided over the weekly meeting last evening. Tho secretary was instructed to write to the treasurer of the late Petone Club asking for the production of the club’s books before next. meeting. Two clubs in arrears with sbscriptions were similarly written to. The matter of marking out touch-lines at Miramar was left in tho hands of the secretary and the treasurer.. Referees are to be instructed not to start any League game until lists of teams on the "proper forms have been handed to them. . Messrs Hamilton, Barnett, Mayer, E. Bothell, and Mawsou. were appointed to act as an entertainment committee in connection with the visit of the Nelson team on June 3rd.
