COMMERCIAL CONFERENCE.
THE PACIFIC ISLANDS. MANAGEMENT OF THE PACIFIC , CABLE. (Received April 13, 10.17 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 13. The Commercial Conference has adopted a resolution stating that the time is opportune for settlement of tho New Hebrides question. A delegate remarked that the action of the Federal Government in relation to islands in the Pacific was so far of a character which suggested that it might be better for the Commonwealth to drop tinkering with them any longer, and leave them to the New Zealand Government, which might bo expected to do something statesmanlike. What was the use of subsidising' a line of steamers to the islands when settlers could not send their produce to Australia? A motion was passed declaring that tho business of the Pacific cable might, by improved methods and increased activity in management, bo considerably expanded, and an annual loss might be avoided or converted into a profit. The loss was attributed to want of business methods on the part of the Postal Department.
