CRICKET.
“An Old Surreyiter” writes:—"l have noted in your column what Mr Jmckie, chairman of the Wellington Cricket Association, has said relative to the suggestion made to him by a headmaster of one of the schools, concerning the encouragement of schoolboy cricketers. I'here is nothing original about that suggestion for years ago I suggested the same thing, and based my promptings upo>. the practice pursued in the Old Country over half a century ago; for there, if a youngster gave promise—never mind what station of life he filled, so long as ho was of decent reputation and possessed undoubted ability as a cricketer—ho was taken in hand by one of thn best teams in Surrey, and admitted to their club free; and, moreover, had all his expenses, gear and uniform, provided free of cost.
