Anti-motorists will rejoice to learn the real meaning of the word chauffeur. It has been discovered in an old book, “A Leader of Society at Napoleon’s Court,” the following extract (chapter vi., 1800) furnishing the clue;—"Out of the strife, disorders, and confusions that for some years had prevailed in France, a new calamity.had arisen. A band of robbers called ‘chauffeurs,’ whose crimes made them the terror of tne whole country, now infested, not only the but Paris itself,” .
